Locked GPS?!

I picked up a Q9 Global at my local ATT COR store (Atlanta - Roswell actually, Holcomb Bridge road) yesterday. As a former Blackberry 8800 user, I am pretty underwhelmed by this device - but no need to rant here about that part.

The thing that has me ranting here is what I was just told by Motorola support. I called AT&T yesterday because I could not get the integrated GPS working with Google or Live. They were utterly useless, they didn't even have any manuals loaded in their systems. So, they gave me the number for Moto. I called them, equally useless, but they did have uber-support guy give me a call today. The research he did told him that the GPS functions for the AT&T device had been LOCKED for use only with the TeleNAV servic...

I found this last night when trying to do the same thing (and works now!)

Download the Telenav program and install it on your Q Global...do not activate the free trial.

This seemed to open up the gps function and allowed google maps mobile to track my location.

Thanks for the reply dragone, but I had tried that. Downloaded TeleNAV, installed it, even ran it - just obviously cant get past the login screen... Havent signed up for the service, though my next step is to do the 30 day free trial and see if that jumpstarts things. At least that will tell me if my device is faulty.

Did you have to tell Google which COM port to use and the associated baud rate?

From my experience with the Tilt; the GPS is on COM4. I had to adjust the options in Windows Live and Google Maps to specify that the GPS is on COM4 from within the application for it to work.
Both applications tracked my location accurately.

Not sure on what COM port the GPS is with the Q.

I cannot get passed the download telenav screen. It keeps telling me download failed. I did call AT&T and I did receive the telenav package. I did log into telenav and sign up (did not pay anything yet). I cannot get it to work on my Moto Q. I did use it on my BB8800, don't see why I cannot get it to work on Moto Q. Also, the phone is not listed on telenav's site. Which phone do we select while using the Moto Q?

I ended up having to call TeleNAV to sign up. Spent 5 minutes convincing the dude on the phone that there was such a thing as the Q9h/Q9 Global - made him point his browser to the AT&T site "oh, I guess it does have integrated GPS and supports TeleNAV". TeleNAV had not updated their site to reflect the new device yet. You could probably just choose a different Windows Mobile device online if you just can't take talking to someone like who I talked to.

Anyhow, I did get TeleNAV installed and logged in - but it wouldnt find my location. I thought it was my device - but then I just kept telling TeleNAV to tell me where I was, from a bunch of different places around Atlanta. It *finally* found all the satellites and I am working, even ba...

Worst thing about it is this: log into the telenav website and there is a picture of The Moto Q9H right on the front. It might take a few seconds forit to sho up, but it's there. How can they show a picture of the very phone they don't know about?

When you signed up, which phone did you pick for the download? The Moto Q9H is not yet on their site throught the AT&T picks.

Thanks

Download it from the menu item which is on your phone. It's called "Get Telenav" BTW, I like it, and I think it's worth the $10/month, since some of the others are licenses, too. It's all about the maps...

I downloaded it from the link in Applications on the Q. From there I called to get it activated.

I recently bought a Tilt, more or less when it first came out, AT&T did not lock the gps to telnav, so can't see why it should be with this device. If so, bring it back and get a Tilt.

I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work. It took awhile before my Q9 picked up on the GPS satellites. There are 4 satellites it picks up on.

I feel that the internal GPS receiver is a bit weak, but nothing that a bluetooth receiver couldn't fix.
