We have iPhones. Any questions?

Rich Brome

Jun 29, 2007, 9:01 PM
The whole Phone Scoop staff (all three of us) are now proud iPhone owners. We're here to answer your questions. What do you want to know?

PS: PLEASE create a meaningful subject line about the topic of your question.

How is the earpiece volume to you? Both me and the wife experienced very poor or low sound through the earpiece of 2 different iPhones.
Yes they were turned all the way up.

Thanks.

Fine.

It's not as "crisp" as I'd like, but the sound is warm, clear, and distortion-free. It's a perfect volume for me at the loudest setting. It might be too soft in a loud environment.

Outgoing audio - like many GSM phones - is STRONGLY affected by where you place your hand. You need to hold it near the top so you don't block the antenna at the bottom. Otherwise you'll sound like crap to the other party.

I appreciate your response. Sadly though I just cannot hear well enough using the iPhone on it's highest setting, and when I slightly move the earpiece on my ear I cannot hear at all, seems my ear actually blocks the speaker opening.
I fly jets for a living and according to our companies flight surgeon my hearing is perfect.

Thanks again.

Is it really as fast and smooth as advertised in the videos? And was it worth that wait to get as far as new features. Thanks.
...
Rich Brome

Jun 29, 2007, 9:11 PM
Yes. It's very fast and smooth. Not 100% like the demo videos, but 90%; you really have to pay attention to notice any stuttering or slowness. In normal usage it's fast and extremely pleasant to use.

the UI is incredible. by far the most amazing looking, and integrated ui on a cell phone to date. apple raised the bar for phones. no, it the iphone doesn't have the greatest hardware, but the ui will blow you away. contacts are so integrated into messaging (sms and email), tapping a phone number in a web page will call it, looking up contact's addresses in google maps, plotting a route to get there, and viewing the traffic on the way. amazing. get this, you can even do this all while on a voice call. that is the only time i noticed any slow-down at all. not on a call, everything flies, i was talking to a friend and hit the home button and was surprised the menu came back at me, from there i was able to surf the web (with some slowdown) and...

Yea I can see that, but it’s a different type of keyboard. When I used the Blackjack, it took me several weeks to cut my mistakes down to only 1 or none in a txt msg due to its size. It’s something you have to work at and can’t expect proficiency immediately. But nonetheless quite frustrating I imagine.

The only QWERTY layouts I can stand are the one on my i730 and Treos. The iPhone's layout was great, but having it be soft ruined it.
...
Rich Brome

Jun 29, 2007, 10:04 PM
Actually, I don't think the layout is all that great, soft or not. Having to go to a special symbol screen just to type a period, comma, or apostrophe is really testing my patience.
...
Wireless Buddy

Jun 29, 2007, 10:08 PM
Yeah, they should have put a period button with the letters. That's one thing that annoys me with BlackBerries is that periods are accessed by pressing an ALT key.

I have been able to text fairly quickly using two thumbs but it's taking a little getting used to and require putting some faith in the autocorrect feature, but it works. FWIW, I have medium to large hands so it's possible for most people.

it's not that bad, especially in landscape mode. You heard right it does have landscape mode, although it seems to have a slower response time. actually it's kinda buggy. The magnifying glass (how you move the cursor) doesn't seem to work in landscape mode. The screen won't rotate when the keyboard is active. It's REALLY annoying to have to press the symbol key just to get to the period and comma. That's just stupid.

I typed this whole post on my iPhone.

Entering usernames and passwords is a royal pain. It's very easy to make mistakes.

The auto-correction is amazingly good for regular words (and totally necessary) but for any unusual text - such as passwords, URLs, etc. - it's a truly painful experience.

Any chance that they will put T-9 (or like) as a patch?

Also is there anyway to delete single entries in the recent call logs like you can with text messages?
So far I can only figure out how to delete the entire list.

Finally, go to Apple.com, contact us, product suggestions for influence on possible software updates.

With all states pushing hands-free & 1st offense tickets, that is a bad move on Apple's part. If they add it later it probably means 3rd party software and that sucks.

Would you agree with the other reviewers that it is certainly an innovative device that has issues and is probably better to either wait for the iphone 2 or serious software upgrades?

In short, do you think it worth switching from another carrier solely for this phone?

Will the MMS feature be available in an ungrade via iTunes?
...
Rich Brome

Jun 30, 2007, 12:20 AM
An "ungrade"? Is that like a downgrade?

😉 😛

Seriously, I don't know. Focusing only on email to share photos, etc. may be part of Apple's strategy to rethink phones, and really the whole phone industry. They want to keep things simple.

Then again, MMS might be added. I'm sure carriers would like it. European carriers may insist on it. If MMS comes to the iPhone, I think that would be the driving force.
...
Tarabottamoos

Jul 5, 2007, 9:34 AM
I doubt that it will ever include MMS, b/c the iPhone doesn't use WAP to access the internet, which is why the MMS doesn't work.(Or MediaNet. Or Downloads thru anything BUT iTunes.) To switch it from full HTML/Safari base to MMS seems like it would go backwards and against everything iPhone/Apple was going for...

Hey rich
since i know u have the 4gb here are some questions

1. how much of the 4gb does the consumer get to use after formating and all else?
2. besides memory any differences between 4 and 8gb?
3. do u recomend it?
4. does the safari browser deliver?
5. and when do u think we will c an unlocked version?
...
Rich Brome

Jun 30, 2007, 12:23 AM
I think mine had 3.44 GB available, IIRC.

No diff. other than memory, AFAIK.

Safari isn't perfect, but it's darn close. It's far and away the best browser I've ever seen on a phone. Its shortcomings compared to the S60 browser are more than compensated for with the great zoom and scroll interface. That alone makes it tops.

If you're not happy, take it back.

There should be some serious protective film on it when you get it. If it didn't come with film, someone used it before you. ...or could the scratch be on the film? Try peeling it off if you didn't notice the film.
...
vas729

Jul 1, 2007, 1:49 AM
I didn't have a protective film on mine. Just the wrap around plastic like you would find on an ipod. Is it that hard to notice? I am looking around on mine, and can't see anything there.

And I am having a hell of a time keeping the screen clean. Even with the provided wipe. All it does is smear everything all up. I wonder if there is still a film on my screen, and I just cant get it peeled off.

i have the iphone to! and i had the same problem till i took it to my friends house. what he did was held his lighter about an inch or so under the screen (for about 15 seconds) till the film started to warm and bubble. as soon as that happened i cooled it real fast by blowing on it then all i had to do was scratch the film off easy as 1..2..3 the screen has never been clearer and my girlfriends make-up doesnt really even smudge it.

Could you compare the rendering/download speed of the iPhone browser via edge to:

1) a treo 600 on 1xRTT,
2) a palm treo on EV-DO,
3) vrz samsung i730 on EV-DO

Could you do the same for the iPhone via WiFi-G (compared to 1, 2 and 3?)

Eric Lin waited quite a while. Zeman and myself each waited under an hour at an AT&T store before they sold out. Then we each went to Apple stores where things were much faster and they had plenty in stock.

We'll wait until we're done reviewing before deciding whether to keep them.

This isn't as specific to the features of the phone as it is to the plans that are offered. I know you can add the data plan onto an existing voice plan so that you don't have to switch plans, but does anyone know if you can start an account with ATT and activate only data? I know it can be done through other carriers with Blackberries, but it seems almost too good to be true - getting an iPhone and still keep your current voice service. Assuming you buy into the iPhone hype, which I totally do 🤤
