Rebate Form on Cingular.com

Look closely at the rebate form. The N75 is listed under the Post Paid Only (Data Devices) section. It is the only device on the list that is not required to sign up on an unlimited data plan in order to get the rebate. Strange considering that it is 3G. You will need an unlimited data plan however Cingular is not requiring it. This is very unCingular. Considering what the phone is capable of you would expect them to require something along the lines of what is required of the Blackjack. Which the rebate form states as:

"+Requires activation on a PDA Personal Plan or a $39.99 or higher unlimited data rate plan or a $19.99 Messaging Xtreme Plan plus a Cingular
Voice Plan of $39.99 or higher."

Its 3G so I don't think they'll let y...

Don't quote me on this where Cingy Data is concerned but this is the way I understand it and I use smartphones. I pay $20 p/m roughly

Cingy considers phones with a keypad a PDA device, phones that are a phone with internet capability are considered smartphones eg 2125, 3125.

The theory is that you would use less data and not do emails and web browsing as much. If you tether a device the rates are the same PDA or Smartphones.

My understanding of it is a little bit different. What it boils down to, in my understanding, is the type of browser the phone supports. If the phone has a full HTML browser on it, as opposed to only a WAP browser, then it is supposed to be on a PDA type plan. This is because WAP uses considerably less data than HTML. Even pre-paid phones have WAP browsers. Less data = less network traffic = lower charges for service. However, most if not all phones that have an HTML browser also have a WAP browser. You can launch either and the network doesn't know. It only transmits data. The volume of data sent/received is the "fingerprint" of what you're using. A regular 3G phone (non-smartphone/non-PDA) can get unlimited WAP browsing for $20/month....

Some basic info on Unlimited data-plans from Cingular:

Consumer:

$20 MEdia Max 200 (to get unlimited MEdia Net)
$40 PDAConnect - required for PDA phones
$60 DataConnect - required for "tethered devices" i.e. laptops

Business:

$20 Smartphone Connect (kind of a business-version of MEdia Net)
$45 PDAConnect - required for PDA phones
$60 DataConnect - required for "tethered devices" i.e. laptops

Direct from Cingular's TOS:

FURTHERMORE, UNLIMITED PLANS (EXCEPT FOR DATACONNECT AND BLACKBERRY TETHERED) CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY APPLICATIONS THAT TETHER THE DEVICE (THROUGH USE OF, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, CONNECTION KITS, OTHER PHONE/PDA-TO-COMPUTER ACCESSORIES, BLUETOOTH® OR ...

Same scenario with the 3125. You could use it just as a phone and organizer and never use any data at all. But, to get the rebate, you have to sign up on the unlimited data plan. For the 3125 it is the $20/month Smartphone Connect. That plan is just like the MEdia Maxx 200 without the additional messaging thrown in.

That's why I started this thread - the rebate form currently does not require you to sign up on a data plan to get the rebate for the N75. Its the only data device on the list for which a data plan is not required to get the rebate.

The problem with comparing the N75 to the 3125 (beyond the obvious) is 3G. I've been told by several cingular reps that due to the way 3G authenticates it intrinsically uses more data than...
