Nokia N80 ?-may be a dopey ? but

if I purchase an unlocked Nokia N80 from someplace like eBay, how do I get it to work with one of the US carriers. I just learned that only Cingular and T-Mobile are GSM carriers and that is what the N80 is, I think. So, do I just buy a cheap Smartphone with appropriate add-ons from Cingular and then change the SIM card or is it more complicated than that?

Please advise!

Need Help Please - US Warranty Issue for UK Phone

Normally, I understand that my phone would not be warrantied in the US cause it is not made for the US by Nokia, though my phone was working just fine. I tried using the Nokia Software Updater to flash my phone. My phone crashed about 80% through and now I cannot urn it on or recharge it. Is there any way I can get this repaired here in the US? Nokia pretty much said too bad. Help!

T-Mobile Announcement - Good For the N80?

I read the following in a PC Magazine e-mail:

"T-Mobile to Announce 3G Plans On Thurs., Sources Say - 10.04.06

By Wayne Rash
T-Mobile sources have told eWEEK that the company is scheduling a press conference for Oct. 6 in New York for the purposes of making a major announcement in the wake of the company's win in the recent frequency auction.

The announcement will take place jointly with officials from Deutsche Telekom and from its US Subsidiary, T-Mobile USA, taking part.

According to parties familiar with the company's plans, T-Mobile will announce its move into 3G communications in the United States using UMTS (universal mobile telephone service) at that time.

"T-Mobile will announce UMTS on 1700 MHz and 2...

Firmware update available now from Nokia

just as the news post was made by phone scoop in mid to late-august, Nokia had opened up available firmware updates either "over-the-air" or via-PC, through Nokia PC Suite. I had been hoping to come across more phones as they have continued to expand upon their list of phones with available updates. Just today, I noticed that they have added the N80 to that ever-increasingly larger list. I'll post how well it goes as soon as I complete the update. Currently its only through the computer, and not over-the-air, however, i'm more excited to see if this update will enable the Wayfinder Navigator service they have been promising compatability for.

VOIP?

I am about to purchase a new cellphone..i just saw that Nokia is coming out with the N75 which will be compatible w/3G in the USA..nice but no wifi-if someone owns this phone..how does the VOIP work? does one call any number when connected to a wifi? does it work thru skype? nobody at nokia seems able/willing to answer these questions..other than the voip calling I don't see an advantage to wifi if you can already connect w/3G or EDGE..any opinions?

Nokia n80 or nokia N73

I've tried the nokia N73 and briefly seen a n80 from what i got to see the pictures seemed better on the n73 than the n80 along with a better battery life. If anyone has any real experience with either of these phones please post or let me know at timmy1703@aol.com. I am also selling my nokia n90 and blackberry 7100t in my quest for buying one of these phone so if anyone is interested let me know both are in great condition.

will the US version support video calling?

i know that there are a few (very limited) towers in the New York area and in the DC area, that support this feature. but i just want to make my desision on which i should get. i just want to know because i want this feature. Granted not many people in the US have a cellular phone that have this feature, more reason for me to want this.

Regarding WCDMA 1900 - New Buyers

1.- How does one know which version of WCDMA the telephone has?
2.- To new buyers - Does your telephone have WCDMA 1900 or WCDMA 2100?
3.- If WCDMA 1900, where did you buy your telephone?

So far, the stores I have found in the USA, that are carrying this telephone, only have the 2100 WCDMA version. This would be a big handicap for this telephone. Maybe strangerthanfiction48 has an idea as to where to get a USA model.

Thank you.

"Internet edition"

I was about to get this phone but saw nokia's post regarding an updated "internet edition" of this phone. Has anyone done any research to give an opinion on whether it is worth it to wait for that version?

N80 Available from Nokia USA

Nokia USA is finally selling the N80 via their website. Note it is the WCDMA 2100 that is listed. No updates on the WCDMA 1900.

N80 for Cingular

Does anyone know exactly when this might be released for Cingular? Hope shizane101 is reading this. Your forum postings have been very helpful to me.

I am debating between this N80 or the Palm Treo 650. I know the N80 is a 3G phone and PDA/Smartphone and the Palm 650 is Edge only (I hear the 3G version for the Treo is coming out in October)....so I'm deciding which phone I should go with...

I've always been a big Nokia fan....

Any info and advice would be helpful...

Thanks,

Spring function on the N80

I've been reading on other forums as well as this one that a drawback on this phone is the slider function does not have a spring mechanism so that it "locks" or snaps in place when sliding. This could also cause the slider to move while in your pockets and automatically dialing numbers.

Can't you prevent that by hitting the main menu button (middle button on the 5 way navigator button and then pressing *

That locks the keypad and prevents inadvertent dialing.......

Music Transfer - need help

well, i got everything working perfectly on this phone now except the music transfer, im using the phone as a modem right now for my computer, mms, wap, and iap settings were easy to get just as everyone says, so i dont know why this can be so difficult for me, but there's little else to go to seeking help on this phone just yet so here it goes-

I can put music on my phone just fine but it wont organize itself. I have a bunch of itunes songs saved on the computer, i open up nokia pc suite, click music transfer, and from there i try it, and i get 1000 songs in the unknown artist or album category. If i try the other way by using the phone for data transfer and put the subfolders containing the music in the phone that way, it still wont org...
