FCC Unveils Small Changes To Sony Ericssons for US

The FCC this week released documents on two new Sony Ericsson handsets. The W712a and Z712a have all the same features as their W710 and Z710 counterparts, however they trade out the loop antenna so common in new Sony Ericsson clamshells for a more traditional extendable antenna. This reversal of technology appears to allow the phones to comply with hearing aid compatibility (HAC) rules that finally go into effect for GSM 850 this month. Previously GSM 850 phones were granted waivers because the antennas interfered with hearing aids. Since these HAC rules are an FCC mandate, it is likely at least one of these models if not both will see light of day in the US. Both phones feature quad-band GSM/EDGE and stereo Bluetooth as well as a 2 Megapixel camera, FM Radio and M2 memory card slot. The W712a also features Walkman software as well as new fitness and pedometer applications.

since when does the gsm network need pullout antennas?

😕
good point, when was the last time a gsm phone had an extendable antenna, i can't think of a single one?

It has nothing to do with reception. The antenna pulls out - and at that funny angle - to get it as far away from the ear as possible, so it won't interfere with a hearing aid.

The manual only suggests that the antenna needs to be pulled about when...

Maybe it's just me...

...being a Verizon person but I think these phones look better with extendable antennas rather than Loops.
DUDE, it's just you!...LOL 😁
I'm a "Cingular person" and I happen to like the extendable antennas. If I see someone around me using a phone without the antenna extended, I extend it for them 😛

ICK!

And I was liking the looks of these two phones too! I HATE stub antennas and extendables are even worse.

There's GOTTA be a way to make these things compatible with HAC without uglyin 'em up like that. The RAZR has an M3 rating and no external antenna, why not these? Is an M3 just not good enough anymore?

Hope these will still be available in their "i" variants with no stubs! Granted you'd have to import, but they still rock quad band and wouldn't have that stub.

i think the RAZR gets an M3 rating is because its internal antenna is in the bulge at the bottom, far away from the ear.
