New phone for European trip?
I'm preparing for trip to Italy in April. I also will be changing to Cingular this summer. Is it better to buy an inexpensive unlocked phone and buy a sim card or buy an unlocked Cingular compatible quad phone now?

You can buy an unlocked phone of your choice now, and just buy a prepaid sim at your destination. eBay is a good source for the phone. When you sign up with Cingular, you'll probably get a free phone. You can then eBay it or use it as a backup.
