GRPS Class 10 vs Class 10/Edge vs Class 12/Edge

Greetings,

Hopefully someone here can clarify the difference between these data modes for me. I've contacted T-Mobile, but, to no avail.

What I'm doing is using my phone as a modem (via a cable) to a laptop to access the net. Below are a few examples of phones and what they're "high speed data access" modes are. Can anyone tell me the differences (speeds, clarity, what???) between the different classes and the Edge?

Samsung T309 - GPRS (Class 10) - Currently have this phone and am connecting consistently at a speed of 460.8

Motorola W409 - (and many more) - GRPS (Class 10) / Edge

Motorola RIZR Z3 - GRPS - (Class 12) / Edge

Additionally, I read that with the Edge, speeds are about half of what they could be available to r...
