I am currently in an Alltel area that will soon be switching to Verizon. My current contract is up with Alltel, so I want to upgrade to a smartphone. The problem that I have is I don't like any of the Alltel smartphones. I do however, like the Samsung smartphones that Verizon has. Is there anyway I can get a Verizon smartphone now while I am still with Alltel?

There's a 'back door' way to do it that is not available everywhere... you'd basically be porting your number to Verizon from Alltel and creating a new account with Verizon. You'd have to call Verizon and see if it's possible with your number in your area.

At this time you cannot put an VZW phone on a Alltel rate plan. It is not possible.

Really. I guess the guy I know who put a BB Storm on his Alltel account and rate plan is just a mirage then.

While the system will allow that ESN change the problem is that Verizon phones are setup to use different towers. Even with the PRL download they will use the wrong towers in many areas. Alltel phones will typically roam off of Sprint towers where the Verizon is going to try like hell to use a Verizon tower. If you were to use a Storm on an Alltel account in say IA it would potentially use the USC towers instead of Alltel in some areas.

I would avoid it if possible.

That's not entirely true, with the correct PRL file and home side programmed. The phone will not roam on the wrong towers. The only case that will happen is if the Verizon PRL somehow gets automatically pushed to the phone after manually loading the new one. With the right PRL and MIN/MDN/programmed the phones are basically identical.

I really have to disagree with you on how the VZW smartphones look. as they are ugly as sin. but if that is what you like you should be able to get to vzw if you are not in one of the listed areas. There is a post on the forums about porting to vzw.

our smart phones are not ugly.

i have no idea where you get that from!

haha!

The Omina is not ugly, BlackBerrys look the same as GSM, and are better with 3G access.

We have the Centro like most networks.

I was refering to the 2 phones that he had mentioned. My only real issue with VZW is that they like to cripple their phones. Look at the specs between the VZW TP and the Alltel or Sprint versions.
