Quick Question

will I am1980

Nov 10, 2008, 1:24 PM
Recently a friend of mine purchased an aircard from Alltel. Well a couple months in, never experiencing any problems with service, they turned his service off and ended his contract.
They said he was outside the Alltel area where he was using it. Now I have been informed that this happened to another of my friends that lives in the same area. So my question is, is this normal, I have never seen this happen before and why wouldnt they do that with these ppls cells that they also have with alltel.

Alltel has a data roaming agreement with Sprint (but not Verizon). I am unsure what other carriers they have a data agreement with. Now, this allows Alltel customers to roam on Sprint's EV-DO network (and vice versa). Now the Alltel customer merrily accesses Sprint's network all the while Sprint is billing Alltel. I am sure when you purchased the aircard you were given terms and conditions limiting usage to no more than X percentage off the Alltel network. If you are consistently using the aircard on a rival carrier's network then you are costing them money. If you were a business owner would you rather lose a customer or lose money?

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Did you say it's not happening to people who are using their cells in the same area? If they're using cellphones they won't be terminated because phone companies are a lot less likely to term you for roaming cell usage. I think EVDO costs a lot more, and besides, Alltel may have regular cell coverage there but not EVDO. :-/
