Alltel in certain major cities...?

I have had Alltel for almost three years here in Phoenix, AZ, and have had very few problems. My contract has been up for a year.

However, my phone recently broke, and I'm currently debating over whether to 1) caugh up the insurance money ($100) for a replacement (RAZR) without contract; 2) renew my contract and get a better phone at discount, or 3) switch carriers.

The reason for (3) is the main purpose for this thread. I'm currently applying for graduate schools, and many of the best schools with the program I want are in the New York or DC areas. As I understand from other discussions, Alltel doesn't actually exist there, but roams on Verizon. SO: my basic question is: does anyone know how reliable that roaming is? Does anyone have ...

to buy service from a provider licensed to serve the area in which you reside. And there are more providers than Verizon in DC & NY. Research. And sign up with the carrier that can give you the plan you want at a price you're willing to pay.

You can do either one, you shouldn't have major problems with your phone roaming.

It's free roam, and you will have good signal because you can roam on sprint or verizon for free.

But remember that wherever Sprint & Verizon have service, Alltel PRL's are programmed for all markets to go with Sprint before Verizon. So if the OP decides to renew with Alltel, he/she better find out how Sprint is in those areas, or the OP might not like Sprint roaming.
I have no experience with Verizon service other than Chicago, NW Indiana, South Bend Indiana, Lafayette Indiana, SW Michigan along I-94, and in Milwaukee & Madison Wisconsin areas.

ok the way our policy works...THe reason why you were having difficulties with the return is because she took OUR number away from our network. If you read the return policy it states that if you are not satisfied with the merchandise you can return it to the store, in order for us to return something so she could recieve proper credit we MUST return it to her number. We unlike Verizon don't allow the customer to activate a number and take it with them UNLESS they have fulfilled their agreement!!!

i will have to agree with dave73 in that the PRLs will choose sprint 1st over verizon and as a customer of sprints network i suggest you try to stay away from them lol so i would look for a provider that has a network in your future area

My sister was up in Maryland for like 3 mths for military and she is on my alltel account she didnt have any problems with it. And I was never charged for roaming! But it is your decision! I would just do the insurance if you want to stick with alltel and not have a contract so if you do have any problems you wont have to cough up $200

I'm getting read to move to a major city too and will be faced with the same issue. I'll be on another carriers network when Alltel's coverage map "claims" to have coverage there. I've visited there so I know. It's not New York but the issue is same. Here are things to consider, and after being faced with them myself I'm going to terminate with Alltel. 1. If you need a new device or accessory, person-to-person customer service, etc (like an Alltel store)...won't get it. Carriers put stores where they actually have service, not roaming areas. 2. If there is an issue with the network who's network u gonna call? hmm 3. EVDO, don't count on it. 4. *228, you can only do this on your carriers network. 5. If you get fed up with the servic...

sorry for the late response as i just joined this forum but,
1. whats the problem with EVDO? that it is faster than 1x... wow thats a huge problem...
2.*228 only on carriers network.... duh but there is a reason people can manually program phones
3. the choice to leave while under contract is going to get you an ETF no matter what carrier you are with.
4. you might not roam with Verizon because you just wont get service, Alltel gives you the choice to use your phone whether or not you would be roaming or not, as it IS the CUSTOMERS choice to use there phone where ever there is a signal even if it is roaming.
5. Us people from the rural areas that Alltel cover are the ones who care. Like many other posts here say Alltel isn't in the maj...

I was in the Baltimore DC area a few months ago and I had no problems at all.

The upside is as long as you have aN ational freedom plan you are cool, too an extent...The downside about it is alltel will allow you to roam for only so long. After a while they can drop you. I read it on the website on the terms of service section.

I have Alltel (YAY0, and they have been a wonderful company to be a part of. I had just recently went to DC and had EXCELLENT roaming capabilities. I actually (phone nerd 🤣 ) force my phone onto different carriers (verizon, sprint,us cellular) because alltel has free roaming. Out of the carriers that Alltel lets me roam on, Sprint has the best coverage in DC, considerably. And yes, alltel lets me roam on all of the other carrier's towers, so i have a good perception of which is better. And it I would go ahead and stick with alltel if you are going to be there not too long. If anything PLEASE, switch to Sprint. After going from Alltel to Verizon, you will feel VERY restricted. Verizon blocks alot of features on there phone. Nor...
