iDEN reconfig/shutdown update

Feb 3, 2012, 1:48 AM
Interesting bit on the PhoneNews.com website, worth reading the whole article:
http://www.phonenews.com/sprint-to-begin-phasing-out ... »

short excerpt:
"Sprint has taken great strides to de-emphasize iDEN since the last major upgrades to the network in 2008 which allowed it to offer unlimited flat-rate service and proved unexpectedly popular, so much so that it was able to increase ARPU on the network and draw in more customers than expected."

Which seems to say that Nextel/iDEN was not dying of natural causes, rather it was murdered by Sprint ;-)

Since Sprint is forcing the change, I hope they give people using old iden phones new cdma phones. From your previous posts Sprint can sell the old handsets to Nextel-Mexico since it seems iden is there to stay. How can Nextel-Mexico offer 3G? I was under the impression it was not possible in the iden network. Or are they using two networks?

Not certain, but I believe it is W-CDMA running in parallel with iDEN:

"In February, NII Holdings signed agreements with Huawei to provide end-to-end W-CDMA solutions to build Nextel Mexico’s W-CDMA networks relating to its 3G spectrum licenses in Mexico."
