The U.S. needs one more merger between wireless carriers. There have been quite a few. One merger created Cingular Wireless, which was once owned by SBC (60%) and BellSouth (40%). Another merger was between Bell Atlantic Mobile, Vodafone/Airtouch Cellular, GTE Wireless and PrimeCo. This merger created the then number one carrier---Verizon Wireless. Later Cingular (which at the time was the number two wireless carrier) purchased AT&T Wireless (which was the number three carrier). The combined entity usurped the 'nations largest wireless carrier' tag from Verizon Wireless. Some Verizon fans cried foul, perhaps forgetting that their company itself was a merger baby. In any case, the FCC allowed the merger to take place with some divestiture of ...

There have been rumors for sometime that DT is going to buy Alltel and Suncom but I doubt this will happen. About a year ago, maybe 2, DT announced they would be attempting to purchase regional carriers but it hasn't happened. I think DT wants T-Mobile to earn the subscribers through activation, not merger despite the benefits named above.

i think they should buy alltel, sell all of the CDMA towers and then put up GSM towers. This would allow them to sell all of the out in the boonie towers for buku bucks and then be rich!

T-Mo is not going anywhere. DT already invested another few million dollars to T-Mobile U.S.A. Remember T-Mo is an international company. DT just owns it. the phones are actually going be similar to Japan service with the UMTS system and not to mention UMA (t-mo in the home service). 3G is probably launching 3rd quarter. the GSM and UMTS system is already in place for T-Mo UK and seems to be working fine. Unfortunately t-mo phones are going to be 6 band phones now, because of the new two bands that were purchased for the 3G network.

Good idea. I don't think that a merger of two companies would be necessary to accomplish this. Let's just make a phone and sell it to all four carriers that will handle both, including all the various bands associated with each.

This phone could also be a world phone with all the goodies. While we're at it, since you can text other carriers for free with a TXTM plan, let's also have a PTT standard for free calling between carriers as well.

Then, it will all just boil down to who is offering me the best bang for my buck.

I agree, that seems to be the direction the industry is going in the next few years. Dual mode world phones. All cdma phones have to be unlocked by 2012 anyway.
