Verizon Wireless or T-Mobile? Help me choose.

I am switching from Nextel to either Verizon Wireless or T-Mobile and I need help in deciding which way to go. I may post this on the Verizon forum to get their point of view also.

Searching posts this is what I have seen so far:

Verizon Wireless:
Better network coverage
can't work overseas
crappy customer service

T-Mobile:
Decent coverage
Works overseas
Great customer service
Great pricing plans for individuals

I have noticed that in the Northern VA area the family plans are about $10 more with Verizon Wireless but still very close.

My parents use T-Mobile, most of my friends use Verizon Wireless. I don't talk to either that much so it is pretty much a wash.

I am trying to decide if I just want a phone (the RAZR...

I have never had any problem with Verizon customer service. There are just some people that have a real bad experience and then they blame everyone involved with the company.

If you want your phone to work in most places you go.. Verizon is your only choice.

I had T-Mobile for about 3 days when the only place I could get a signal was in a town or near a major interstate.

I've found the phone support for T-Mobile to be excellent. It was mediocre for Verizon.

However, the in store support and sales staff are far better with Verizon than T-Mobile. The two T-Mobile stores near my house employ most teenagers would are clueless about the product they sell. Neither store offers repairs....

It is actually funny that you mention that in store support is better for Verizon. My brother went to three different Verizon Wireless stores in MD. At each store there where more reps than customers but he had to take a number at each. After waiting for awhile he would leave and try again at a different store. I am not sure who he went with but it was not Verizon Wireless. This was all do to lack of in store support in the MD area.

I did try my wifes cheap Verizon phone today in Purcellville (which is west of Leesburg). Her phone had 5 bars all the way there and back with the exception of one time it dropped to 4 for about 30 seconds. My Nextel phone went from "No Service" to 3 bars at the best. I do think it is my Nextel phone t...

Generalizations are bad. My phone works in ALL the places I go and I have...T-Mobile. In fact, in the city I live, the coverage is as good as Verizon, believe it or not. I always get plenty of signal and NO dropped calls (except for under one particular bridge on the freeway, but all the carriers here drop calls ...

T-Mobile is great in the city, and should have coverage most of where you are going. Check their website for detailed coverage to see if it works for you. The only kicker is that Verizon will work in the DC subway, and no other carriers do. This may or may not be a big deal for you.
I would suggest trying T-Mobile for the free 2 weeks and see if you like it.

Both my wife and I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile. The only advantage VZN has is their coverage. Here in San Diego, VZN has a great network. I haven't had a VZN call dropped while driving on a major freeway in recent memory. With T-Mo, I have calls dropped all the time. (I attribute part of this to my current phone.) I also liked VZN in store service center. The VZN store near my house would updated the OS on my phone any time there was a new version and would fix minor hardware problems (missing screws, cracked battery covers, etc...).

On the other hand, my T-Mo monthly bill is much lower! I my opinon GSM phones are better than CDMA phones. I can go days without charging my GSM phone. The overall selection of GSM phones is larger and ...

I would agree with the dropped calls and lack of coverage with T-Mobile, but I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile because Verizon stopped working well in my area (western Washington state).

My Verizon service was almost perfect for a while (even working in the mountains), and then all of a sudden, I would get 0 to 2 bars of signal on my LG VX7000. If you ask me, I would rather pay less money and go with T-Mobile especially if you don't travel away from interstates or major cities much.

T-Mobile will even try to improve your coverage if you tell them you don't get good coverage where you live. Ever since I told them about the poor coverage I experienced it has been getting a little better lately.

LG phones tend to be iffy on reception. My brother had the LG VX4400 and reception was terrible on his LG Phone. He now has the Motorola V265 and has the same problems with reception, and this is in flatland area. He didn't take my advice to go with the Samsung a650 for great reception. My Samsung a650 has worked where my old Motorola 120c wouldn't. My Uncle Terry has the LG VX6100 and while he has no problems using his phone outside of his house, he can't use it in his house, while I can use my Samsung in the same spot. For my Uncle Bob, he got 4 LG VX6100 and only his gives him problems. It might be possible that your LG was going bad and not Verizon's reception. My Samsung at a year old is still going strong with reception. As fo...

I thought T-Mobile used Cingular towers for roaming. I think Cingular uses the 850 band while T-Mobile uses the 1900. Is this true?

Cing uses both 850 and 1900, while T-Mobile only has 1900 with some roaming agreements with companies that use 850. T-Mobile has roaming agreements with other companies, including Cingular, but the roaming agreements are only good for certain areas. Customers roaming on other companies' towers is costly for cell carriers, and so they tend to restrict the areas where you can do it. If it's an area where T-Mobile has it's own coverage, there will be no roaming agreements, even if the coverage is poor.

I have had both carriers, so for my two cents worth:

VZW's network is bigger, but not always better. Their coverage maps are not accurate, so you can be in an area when they show service, but you won't have it. I am not referring to a building or neighborhood, I mean 20 mile stretches where they show service but don't have it. If T-Mobile's map shows you will have coverage, you really do get pretty solid coverage.

In rural areas, VZW will most likely have better coverage...T-Mobile has improved greatly over the past year, so check their map also. Be careful with VZW phones...all-digital phones usually do not roam in rural areas where there is often analog coverage.

VZW's coverage can also change. They regularly change their r...
