T-Mobile and roaming?

I'm a relatively new T-Mobile customer and I'm still trying to decide whether to stay with T-Mobile or if I should switch to another carrier...

I am very interested in comments from people that travel fairly often, especially by car. How is T-Mobile coverage for voice and data when driving long distances? Are there any large areas or cities where coverage is bad?

Also, are there certain phones that get better reception than others? I am patiently waiting to see what new phones T-Mobile will offer in the near future, but I am concerned about the lack of new phone offerings...

Nokias tend to be best as far as signal goes. Large cities you are more likely to have service. Rural towns,...

I have been with T-Mobile four years now, and have traveled quite extensively. I have found the coverage to be very good both in major cites and rural areas. I would recommend triband phones from either Motorola or Samsung to ensure good performance while traveling.

Another question I have is: does T-Mobile have good roaming agreements with other carriers? For instance, if I go to an area that shows no coverage on the national map, will I still get a signal, or will I just have to wait until I get back to "civilization?"

I don't plan to travel much outside of large cities or main highways, but if I do, I want to know how good or bad roaming coverage is. I'm guessing I won't have coverage like Verizon has - last year I drove through the mountains in Colorado and I had surprisingly good coverage in the middle of nowhere.

All depends where you will be driving. From Boston to Miaimi - fine. From NYC to Chicago, fine. From Seattle to San Diego, fine.
However, if you often travel way off main highways and really rural areas you will need to pay the premium prices charged by either Cingular or Verizon. Their prices are about double on many plans.
Don't by service because of phone design, buy service from someone who provides coverage where you need it. What's the use of having a fancy phone if all you can do is look at it?

Good point... I do still have my LG VX7000. The reason I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile is because Verizon told me that they could not guarantee service in my area and that it had to do with the process of getting a new cell site approved (it sometimes takes a while for a local government to approve).

All I care about at the moment is good reception and the ability to send and receive text messages. I will eventually want to have a smartphone, but I think there is a way to go before they are worthwhile (i.e., having higher data speeds)...
