UMA vs. Femtocell

I think this has been discussed already, but I'm still puzzled as to why t-mobile continues to support UMA when femtocell is rearing it's head in every carrier. I know it was a breakthrough when it was first released, but femtocell requries no specially equipment and no additional battery consumption. I think t-mobile would have a LOT more success investing in a femtocell-router type device and charging that $10 monthly fee for it. even with the additional $10 most people on t-mobile are still saving an insane amount of money over every other carrier.

UMA allows you to connect anywhere in the U.S. AND the rest of the world where there is wifi access.

Plus you don't need another router for UMA, right?

And TMO did it because they're well aware their coverage is lacking. So UMA was a simple way to use something most everyone already has in their home to better their coverage.

And there's no way (as yet) to stop VZW femtocell from letting other VZW users leach off your broadband. 😡

yes, like I said UMA was a good solution when it was first released because there was nothing else really like it out in the american market yet. now it's almost a hassle trying to get a customer to take the t339 when they have their heart set on a gravity with reception in their home being the deciding factor.

as far as mooching off other peoples network, i have no solution for that. it's one of the things that's going to need to be worked on over time. but just like wifi range it usually extends to your house and mabye nextdoor too. nothing beyond that usually.

WOW! 😲
Reception would be the most important factor. Then I'd worry about the phone.

And the Gravity, yuck!

yes, most people do have high speed internet and most do have a router. The problem lies in special phone eqipment that limits them. i know a femtocell enabler is special equipment, but i'm talking about the handsets. a g1 for example isn't UMA, so the only smartphone a customer that needs uma can have is a blackberry.

UMA can be used world wide, but the customer still gets charged international roaming cause the of the IP address that the wifi registers so it's more or less pointless.

They do not get charged international roaming, unless you are you are connected to a tower and not WiFi. I have used it in Germany no problems and I know several other people that have used it with no problems. T-Mobile doesn't use the IP address for billing. UMA is a better technology for me because of the international use. And I can use UMA without any extra charges as a coverage enhancement, while most carriers are charging a monthly fee for femtocell use. So yeah, UMA > femtocell IMO

In another Post Anchorman had a large bill while using UMA in Saudi Arabia. I am not sure why he was charged when other posts say it works. Check out the post UMA International January 24, 2009 by anchorman.

Is there a definitive answer?

Technically you should be getting charged for using your phone over seas regardless if its on gsm or wifi. From what I have seen is some people for what ever reason do not get charged when on wifi. Not sure why, guess they are just lucky.

From what I've heard, in order for the UMA service to work overseas and not get charged is that you DO NOT have the WorldClass international roaming service active on your account. This is in case that UMA switches back to GSM for whatever reason, the call would simply disconnect instead of going on and getting hit with roaming charges.
