why? it cost the company money to change a phone number so why shouldn't that cost be passed down to the customer since it's the customer requesting it? if you take the time to actually think about what goes on with a number change and all the different programs and databases that need to be updated, it makes sense.

actually the upgrade fee is $15 for t-mobile, and not only does it take time and effort to change and track the new numbers, but the fee will also make people think twice about changing their #s whenever they have an argument with their boyfriends ๐Ÿ™„

i wasnt too stoked when i heard about the upgrade fee but at least as an existing customer i got a better discount than new customers and i didnt have to mail the rebate. so really i still saved 15 dollars on my new phone and didnt have to do the rebate, i hate rebates, mostly bc i never mail them! ๐Ÿ™‚ so im okay with it as long as i get a better deal!

Maybe Verizon doesn't charge an upgrade fee, but they find every other way to nickle and dime you to death, including disabling functions on phones so you are forced to use Verizon's pay for service. They even charge to transfer your call list from one phone to another, something Tmobile does for free. Yeah, what a deal Verizon is! That's why I left them for Tmobile.

EVERY COMPANY DOES THIS... So T-Mo has to also. "fair competition" practices.

But they are also doing it so they can continue giving currents services, like...

Partial Discounts- you can get a discount off a phone even when you are within a contract period, of course renewing again. for example, the Pearl is 149.99 with two year for new or fully qualified customers, it is 299.99 to buy out right and it is 227.99(including fee) for a partial.. actually the partial for the pearl 3 weeks ago was 267.99, so the upgrade fee made the price go dow.

One Year Contracts- Apparently they are trying to reduce phone cost when signing a One Year Contract.

Promo Plans- Helps with getting promo plans out there, currently 1500 with N/W for 49.99 ...

$18 is $18.

No wonder phone companies have to charge that... they have to make the money somehow to pay all it's reps the enormous pay checks that they're getting every two weeks that make $18 chump change to them! Damn... I gotta get back into customer care at T-Mobile if $18 is nothing to you guys!

$18 almost puts a half a tank of gas in my car. It'll buy my daughter a few of those LiL Pet Shop toys she likes. It could buy me a 2 pack of reindeer at Walgreens for the lawn (after rebate) and l...

Sure give me a paypal account, if its really that much of an issue for you. (And guess what T-Mobile employees have been hit MUCH worse than the customers have, pfft I wish I only lost $18 every two years! Try $1k+ a month!)

You save HUNDREDS of dollars a year by having T-Mobile service. T-Mo does not nickle and dime their customers. Want examples? Sure!

When browzing T-Zones, you do not get charged a minute or dime. You buy a ringtone, all you pay is that ringtones cost. Verizon or Sprint?? Ohhh no, you get charged minutes AND data transfer for just LOOKING and for the actual download.

Also, T-Mobile is always willing to backdate rate-plans(if the bill cycle hasnt closed). Ive seen customers spend a mere $30 dollars more for a high...

T-mobile does this to all their customers. offers you something good then hits you with a dollar amount you must pay to get what you want. Then if you threaten to cancel they bring up the fact that you will owe them $200 dollars per line if you are still under contract.

P.S. when you call customer service don't ask to speak with a supervisor cause they do not want to talk to you or hear your problem. ๐Ÿ˜

The Charge for changing your mobile number is $15 dollars. Th Upgrade fee has always been incorporated into the cost of handset upgrades now T-Mobile is being explicit about separating that from the phone cost.

exactly, you have always paid for an 18 dollar fee yet it was already incorporated into the price so there was no room for discussion being that the fee was only in certain markets in which they told customers they were being charged a fee to upgrade, that market had a great experience with it so t-mobile then decided to unviel it nation wide in which you already paying for it but now instead of being incorporated into the phone it is a seperate fee...you should not complain if your a customer, because you don't know the business aspect of cellular and you think you are doing me a favor by upgrading when it is simply not the case...the company allows you after 30 days of service to get a partial discount on a new handset, what other company ...

Makes sense, I guess.

But damn... all those free phones we've gotten with upgrades should have really been -18.00???

It's kinda upsetting that I never got the $18.00 credits on the -18.00 phones!

Um, your explanation makes NO SENSE when you say that they "incorporated" the fee into the price of the phone prior to calling it an "upgrade fee" when I have NEVER paid an upgrade fee on an upgrade. How do I know this? Cause when the price of the phone is FREE and never having to pay anything more than that (other than shipping), then it's kinda obvious that there was no "upgrade fee" that you speak of...

And again with the "can't afford the fee" crap... Can I afford it? Yeah. SHOULD I have to pay it when I have never had to pay it in...

correct, it has never been there for fully qualified customers, so it was free, but it was always there for partial discounts being that nobody ever waits for there period to be over and to get the free phone like yourself (shellis 129)...that's why the phones were 167.99 and 217.99 hence the 18 dollar fee, why would a lie my track record on here has always been for the customer giving them the tips and tricks on how to get things free...we didn't even know that there was an extra fee because we weren't in the test market and it was not unveiled to us, we didn't like it either yet then they showed us that it was always there, the reason for it is for tax purposes, they found a way to continue to charge it yet right it off...sorry if i came o...

Ya, the ironic part is that when the upgrade fee was implemented the partial discount went down overall, and the full discount went up.

I remember when they ninja added the upgrade fee to partials early this year. I had always wondered why it went up $18, just seemed like an odd number to raise prices by. And now I know why.

I think the fee is simply a profit gainer. DT is in trouble, T-Mo USA is going to need to be more profitable continue to expand and keep pace with R&D.

wanna know the real reason for the $18.00 upgrade fee? IT'S BECAUSE OF SHIPPING AND HANDLING! T-mobile now charges the $18.00 because everyone would want the shipping and handling fee waived when they got an upgrade.. i used to work for t-mobile and all the customers wanted the shipping fee waived! i hated that they were getting the phone for free and would complain about paying $16.00 for the shipping!.. us as customer service reps. had the ability to waive the fee, then they took that option out! and now they made it a MUST! i'm glad t-mob. started charging the $18.00!!!! good for them. that way they can actually get their money back for shipping the phone to their customers!!!

it's like.. "you want a better, newer phone?... pay the ph...

So, the free ground shipping is really $18.00? And express shipping is $34? If I go to a store then, I don't have to pay the upgrade fee?

I am willing to pay for shipping. A "fee"... not so much. I'm more likely to ask for the fee to be waived when it's just a "fee" and it's something that is not easily explained. Why would you NOT waive the fee? The company isn't losing any money if I don't pay it. Shipping is different. SOMEONE has to pay UPS and if it's not me, it's going to be T-Mobile and that would be them losing money. But why would I sign a new 2 year contract, pay for a phone and then have to pay T-Mobile an extra $18 for the opportunity to spend more money with them for two more years?

I appreciate the attempts at trying to e...

Um, OMG, Chucks... no, I'm not one of those customers who wants everything for free. Thanks for making an (un)educated guess on that one though! This is the problem... when they recently add an $18.00 fee to have the privilage of upgrading and signing a new 2 year contract, it's kinda upsetting. I can appreciate the fact that you make so much money that $18.00 is peanuts to you, but to most people, including myself, it's not. I don't have the luxery of living with mom or 3 different roomates (I, myself, like to make (un)educated guesses every now and then too). I have car payments, insurance, 2 kids, bills, etc.

And to correct you on most customers wanting free shipping... it RARELY happened to me when I was an employee with T-Mobile. Cus...

Go ahead and go to Sprint but have fun being charged to call customer care, have your contract extended even if you are changing the phone on your account with a phone you already have, and still paying the $18 upgrade fee when you are ready to get a new phone. Why are you compalining? Even with the $18 upgrade fee, T-Mobile's plans are still cheap and you are saving enough every month by having a cheap plan to more than cover the cost of the $18. If you really don't want to pay it, then get a phone on Ebay and be happy.

You know what's funny? Most people want to SAVE money. But the majority of people here seem to be FOR this upgrade fee.

Jbeck... I appreciate the low rates that T-Mobile charges. Their low rates are the reason a lot of people have chosen them. But when the rates start to raise and they start charging fees for this and that and the other thing, T-Mobile will be no different thatn Sprint, Verizon or Alltel.

Chucks says "GOOD JOB T-MOBILE FOR PUTTING THAT FEE SO CUST. LIKE YOU DON'T HAVE A CHOICE BUT TO PAY IT!"

That's like saying "Yay for high gas prices!" or "Yay for rip off charges for calling customer care!". You must get all excited when the bank charges you $35 for overdrawing your account. What if they started charging a $2.00 s...

I am a t-mobile employee and I hate charging you the $18.00 upgrade fee. But the point that everyone here is simply trying to make is to quit complaining as much as you are because it is not going to change. Just be happy you are with t-mobile who has the lowest "upgrade fee" of all the carriers.

To put it in slightly better perspective the fee is helping to bring the cost down on some of the higher end phones and actually bringing better discounts to our existing customers besides the "helping with shipping".

I know not all phones have come down to lower than new customer discounts but they have circulated different discounts and benefits to our existing customers and I as an employee can only hope that it will continue to bring d...

exactly.

the 18 upgrade fee sucks, but look at some of the discounts that are rolling out for existing customers... they're are three data phones that have an additional $100 off on just a partial upgrade. (3-11 months with t-mobile)

the upgrade fee truely is in place to lower the price of t-mobile's phones even more.

To add to that: That friendly sales rep at your store is very expensive for the company. I have been told by upper management that this fee helps cover whatever commission that rep may have been paid off of selling you that phone/service feature. Obviously, the company will not publically say that and instead will publically justify the fee with some PR mumbo jumbo that nobody buys. This fee is the biggest rip off if you got poor service at the store you bought it from.Often times the fee is waived if you purchace online so keep an eye out for that. Hope this puts some better perspective on that.
