Voicemail text alert. Why this way? Annoying!!

jagster

Why does T-Mobile not use the little message indicator instead of sending a text message when you have unheard voicemails waiting?

I find this very annoying and have been looking to switch to another carrier just for this reason. Now that Cingular has integrated AT&T's towers, that make me even more eager to switch for the better coverage as well as proper voicemail indicator.

Any T-Mo guys here that know why this is and if they are planning on changing this?

It is in the works right now. Look for a brand new voicemail platform to launch sometime in Q1. This will specifically address your issue. And by the way, that is a pretty pathetic reason to leave a company, don't ya think?. 😕

All other things being equal (or close enough), not really.

I usually don't have a chance to check my voicemail right away and I don't always remember that I had one waiting when I finally do get a chance to check it. Without an indicator, I will sometimes go almost a week before I get the voicemail, usually because I get another one at that time. While a week late voicemail is not the norm, a couple days delay is.

Now I could just choose not to read the text message and have a little envelope icon as a reminder but then I need to go and read the message after I check my VM just to get rid of the icon. Not to mention it could be a 'real' text message. But this should not be necessary. Every wireless phone I've had prior to T-Mo gi...

Yes, it is annoying, I completly agree...I have worked for the company for a little over the year, and though they do seem like text messages, they are not. They are system generated voicemail alerts and can be turned on and off. You can either do that through your phone (depending on model) or though the website (www.mytmobile.com)

what happens if you turn them off? Do you just not get notified at all if you have a voicemail? 😳

Well no, you still get notified-the icon will still show up on your screen that you have a voicemail, but the alert will not come through. 🙂

When I found out about this "text message alert for voicemail". I called T-Mobile to ask about it because I thought my phone was broken, but it wasn't. While I was on the phone with them they also said that it's a feature that only the northeast uses so I was like ok (this took place a couple of months ago). Because while I was in the southeast I only got the "regular" voicemail indicator. Then I went back up north I was like "What the F*ck!". I thought it was annoying too but I got used to it! Also I have a question for "Amumey" (or anyone else who knows)what "voicemail platform" are you talking about? Like what is it & what is it going to do etc...

Thanks!

Funny, I also called them because I thought my phone was not set up correctly. The girl I spoke to couldnt tell me why it was working that way and gave me the # for Motorola. When I spoke to Moto they said its just the way T-Mo does it.

BTW, I'm in the South-West (southern cal), so its not just in the North-East.

The thing is that I want a new phone and I don't want to get stuck in a contract with these guys if they don't change this feature sometime soon.

You guys are all a bunch of babies. This is the way it is, just deal with it. You can't seriously tell me that you are going to cancel your service because you dont get a genuine voicemail indicator on your phone.

Are YOU serious?

If I feel that I would be happier with the service of someone else, of course I would.

But to shed a little light, I'm not waiting for my contract to end.. It ended 2 years ago. And in that time I've tested Sprint and the old AT&T GSM (now Cingular blue). And the main reason I've been looking to switch is the voicemail.

Sprint I won't touch any time soon. AT&T has improved since I tried them and now with the Cingular merger it's even better.

So to answer your question, since I have another option which I believe will give me comparable service *AND* a true voicemail indicator, yes, I would cancel because of it. Why not?

Oh! So I guess it expanded or they game me some wrong information. Because she said "Oh, it seems you were a customer in the souteast and now your a customer in the northeast". And I said yes, I moved from Georgia back to NYC again. And she said "oh". But it took her like 25 minutes to find out why I was getting text messages now and not before as a voicemail indicator. Bye the way, I think you should stay with T-Mobile for a couple of reasons:
Verizon
1- Is too expensive
2- Doesn't have that good of "in building"
coverage.
3- Barely any good services like only "1"
bluetooth phone etc...
Cingular (AT&T)
1- They already are having problems with their
merging with AT&T.
2- One of the most horrible customer s...

Verizon is out because their prices and phone selection.

I was trying to decide between AT&T and Cingular, but now that they have merged it's really tempting due to the better coverage. Right now I get the same coverage as the old Cingular, but the new Cingular phones also bounce to the AT&T towers when the signal is stronger. The AT&T phones lock on to the AT&T towers unless there is not one around.. even if there is a stronger (closer) Cingular tower around.

I have already seen where AT&T/Cingular towers complement each others' dead/weak spots.

Maybe someone here can chime in and let me know if T-Mo is going to ride on AT&T's towers as a result of the merger (T-Mo shares Cingulars towers in my area). If so I can expect to reap ...

Well with Cingular's customer service I called about 3 weeks ago because my friend had just got her first cell phone & service provider (which was Cingular). But she never had a cell phone, so she really didn't know anything about like how to setup voicemail, storing numbers etc. So she comes to me to help with her voicemail because it doesn't work. So I thought oh all you have to do it record your voice greeting & put a password. Was I wrong!! The phone needed to have a voicemail number stored then you needed to program it into the phone. So I called Cingular and told the guy the situation after waiting for 15 mins for someone to pick up. Then the he was like Ok, can I get into your account? I was like yes so my friend gave me her informati...

I think having one greeting for when you aren't available and one for when you are on another line is an excellent feature. ATT has this as well. T-M doesn't, as far as i know - unless you are only offered it when you turn off call waiting.

oh yes, and the whole VM thing-why it's different for some people, when we bought out powertel in 2002, that was a regional carrier that covered the southeastern states. Their existing voicemail system was compatible to our network, so instead of changing it, we incorporated it. So, yes...we have one VM system for the southeast, and another for everyone else. There have been talks of making this all into one, I don't know exactly when, but a lot of our systems/programs are being "revamped". it wouldnt surprise me in the least if this was.

We've had small issues with the vendor we use (hence the term "platform") and we are looking to make it a better experience, easier to use, and add that nice little feature for the voicemail indicator. 🙂 As for any other specifics, I'm not sure. We are only given small peices of info and a tentative launch date.

Instead of pressing "1" to hear your new messages, could we have the option to "Press or Say 1 to hear new messages"

With my bluetooth headset it would be convenient to just say "one" instead of trying to press the number on my phone while driving.

Any chance we could say these options instead of pressing the option in the new voice mail system?

If your handset is capable of voice tags just record a voice tag that says voicemail. Or you could just pull off the road!

One you are already in the voice mail system, you can just say the options you wish.. for example, you say "ONE" to listen to your messages, instead of pressing the number One on your phone. This would mean it is truly a hand-free voice mail system.. I don't know if any carriers offer this right now, but it seems like a no-brainer feature right now.

When T-M took over the old Powertel market in the Southeast they kept the std. VM notification method. Everywhere else in the country the awful text message method is used.
There have been many threads about this at:
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=412 ... »

Everything else being equal, I would switch because of this. Obviously T-M has other features that keep us with them - coverage where we need it, better pricing etc.

Actually, for clarification what they did was to keep the existing VM system in the Southeast (which had VM notification), while all the other markets were consolidated onto another platform on which the MWI icon was not enabled for whatever reason.

I took a call last night from a woman in GA who was LIVID about her SE voicemail-she hated the alerts, and also that the platform currently used does not offer password protected voicemail when accessing from the handset, just for remote access. So, I filed a troubleticket under the "voice" and actually got a response today from an engineer that said "your request is pending, we have identified a solution and will be implimenting it shortly, please continue to check for updates" never heard back from a voice ticket before, this sounds possibly promising.
