Unfixable problem = LOUSY service

At present I have the misfortune to have Cingular (I won't call it service - that might
imply they're doing something helpful) as a carrier. I got a Sony-Ericsson W300i in
December of 2006. I have an intermittent problem that sends the majority (seems to be
ALL of my important calls!) of my callers to my voice mail. My phone rings, but when I
try to answer no one is there. Cingular has been unable to fix the problem. They've
replaced the phone four times, the sim card once and in desperation I even had them
change my number. They still send my callers to my voice mail. Cingular has graciously
offered to replace my W300i with a phone that sells for $100 less than what I paid for
the W300i and doesn't have anywhere near the fea...

I don't work for Cingular so take this with a grain of salt...

Most carriers have a lemon policy where if your phone is replaced under the manufacturer's warranty X number of times, they'll let you get a different phone at a discounted rate. It sounds to me like this is what's going on with the phone that sells for $100 less than the W300i. This also seems fishy to me because when the lemon law goes into effect, the carrier usually offers a phone with similar features. My carrier (again I don't know about Cingular) will let you choose from several different models. I'm skeptical that they're forcing you into a specific phone, especially if it doesn't do the same things. What kind of phone are they offering you?

I've seen this prob...

Thanks for the voice mail tip. Having them turn the voice mail off was going to be my next step. I started troubleshooting it myself a few phones ago. "dealing with uneducated employees" is an understatement. A lot of what they're doing would be funny if it wasn't such a pain. After the 2nd phone replacement I suggested they try the sim card. The SUPERVISOR I was working with told me I could either have a 3rd phone or pay them $27 for a new sim card. (honest!) I took the 3rd phone, then called the next week, got a different supervisor and got a replacement sim card - free.

I'm disabled and don't have a car, so I've been doing everything on the phone as far as support goes. No vehicle is also the reason I haven't filed in small claims alre...

☹️ sorry for the mishap, as a former call center employee....that was bad service, not all reps are like that. I promise! I don't know if you had a chance to speak to the office of the president, i think that your chances would've been better there instead of spending money to take cingular to court. Now, I don't know all the details...but, 9 times out of 10, your issues is resolved by that dept. They are there for a reason and yes...when you do write to the complaint line...you voice is heard.

He also waived his right to sue Cingular under their terms and conditions. The ToS state that all such disputes are instead resolved by binding arbitration instead.

Thanks, but that's the first thing they want to try each time. I actually fell for it the first two times. If it's set to less than thirty seconds the person will insist that they've found the problem. Telling them that the same thing has been done to the last 4 phones doesn't seem to register with them. It's amazing.

Did you port your number from a different carrier? It sounds to me that this is an issue in the switch (or trunk) I forgot what it's called. I'm not in customer service, but I know that there were issues of this nature once the whole WLNP took effect. It has something to do with the prefixx of the phone number, if it was not generated by Cingular calls would have problems reaching.
If Cingular gave you this number it could be that someone ported to Cingular and cancelled right away, and now you have this number.
The best it could happen is them figure this out an just load your number to the data base. The worst? You may have to change your number. 😢

I had the account (with Cingular) for 2 years before I got the W300i. I had them change my number a couple of weeks ago to a different prefix. No change. I'm going to have them turn off my voice mail on Monday. Maybe I can eliminate the problem since Cingular can't fix it. Thanks for the idea though.

well braking the contract will be very tough to do. They are upholding the warranty that the "manufacturer" has on your phone by doing warranty exchange and you got a free sim card and a free telephone number change from them.

They even offered you a discount on a different model (not required to do) and they still offered. You chose the phone, they didn't make it but are above what they are required to do and you better believe after all this you are gonna be held to the agreement since they have done all this for you.

If you pay for a service that does not work your shouldnt be bound by anything. Thats like saying we know you bought this 37in TV and we understand that its not working properly, we cant give you your money back but heres a 33in TV instead.

All they checked was that the time was set to 30 seconds for my email forwarding, I believe. Remember, it's intermittent, I don't think it has anything at all to do with any settings.

I have a w300i and its one of the best phones ive owned so apparently the phone is not the issue especially if its been replaced so many times. I would have turned off the voice mail from the beginning of this on going skirmish between you and Cingular and no one is without fault.

but seriously....there is lots of diff. phones we could offer you that wouldnt be downgrades...either your calling in with a bad attitude (understandable) and people dont feel the need to help you b/c of it, or your just talking to morons, sounds like youve been talking to alot of dummies in cust care (probaby warranty too, there are lots of "mentaly challenged" people working around here.)....but you prob dont even need xchanges...whats the coverage like in the area?

Where do you live? I have a w300i and get great service. Try this ... pull the sim and battery without first turning off the phone. Leave the sim and battery out for like 90 seconds then replace them and turn the phone back on. Let the phone power up and let it sit still with good signal for another 90 seconds. If this doesn't help I have plan B. Go to your neighborhood Cingular/AT&T store and make sure your wearing carpenter clothing and have a hammer in the carpenters sling. Wait your turn .. maybe 10 minutes to and hour. When you get the helpful representatives attention and its your turn place your phone on the counter. Ask the representative to place their hand on the phone as if your going to show them something about your phon...

k.
1. the se 300 sucks for pretty much everything fyi.
2. probably the phone that you get from warrenty exchange would be much better, despite price differences. The price is not alwayss indicitive of the service.
3. a comparable phone that you might try requesting is the se 810. i have one and love it.
4. escalate to a manager or to a manager's manager. go on about canceling and taking you and your family and your friends and your dogs down with you.

The problem is the W300i, not Cingular. I proved it today. I got a friend who has a
working W300i to swap sim cards with me today and the trouble stayed with my phone. To date that seven (7) of these that have all failed in the same way. I took it into a Cingular store yesterday to have them check it, so it's not a setting. The one I have now is also forwarding some calls without even ringing, which really sucks. As far as I know the other six I had always rang the phone even though they forwarded the calls to voicemail.

Maybe it's not the W300i's. My friends phone has started failing now. Doing the same thing, only his fails more often than mine. His has started to forward almost every call to his voicemail.
