I am currently a Verizon subscriber who is thinking of switching to Cingular since I would like to get a "World" phone as I plan to do a lot of traveling. I wanted to know how these phones work overseas. It seems that airtime is expensive overseas but I have heard that you could purchase a card with minutes on it while you are in another country and just plug that in - Is that correct?

You would need a tri band, gsm phone that is unlocked. Better to get one that is 900/1800/1900 than the ones that are sold in the states. A bit more expensive, but will work anywhere. The thing is, gsm in the states uses 850(sometimes called 800) so if you get a phone with 900, your reception won't be as good, but it will work. My advice is not to get a Cingular phone, and buy a phone online, or when you get to where ever you are going to buy one.

To add to your question... the V600 is recalled but V551 is coming out to replace it... It's basically the same phone but records video clips as well...

Nokia 6230 is pretty much out on the market but many dealrs seems to shy away from the hefty price tag... ouch...

Airtime will always be expensive with international roaming. I think in the western Europe it's like $1.29 per minute.

If you want a phone that is a GSM world capable, take a look at the V400, V600, V551... the V400 is the most esaily obtainable phone... it's a Quad band phone that supports 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 Mhz ...

My advice... if you are going to Europe frequently, get a cheap plan or prepaid over there...

International roaming is expensive...

the 6230 has not been released by anyone in the states. the dealers who are selling the phone are shipping in euro versions without the 850 band. That's why it's so damned expensive. Wait til the US version is released by cingular and get it for around 179.99 with a 2 year contract. you'll be able to get it for 299.99 without a contract. You could also get a Nokia 6620.... that phone is a world phone with every option in the book.

the 6620 and 6230 both operate on 850/1900/1800.... so that makes them BOTH world phones

the 6620 is a series 60 which does run everything in the book, compared to the 6230 which only runs java

First, Verizon offers a world phone now, so you don't have to switch if you're otherwise happy with Verizon.

Yes, airtime is normally expensive when overseas. It depends on the carrier and the country, but the range is typically $1 - 1.50 per minute.

Yes, you can get prepaid SIM cards overseas that generally offer cheaper rates for calling locally and back to the States, but beware that your phone must be unlocked, and the card you get will have a different (European) phone number. You can only be reachable at your phone number when you leave your original (Cingular, etc.) SIM card in the phone.

Also, since it's prepaid, you're buying in blocks. So if you only use half the value on the card before coming home, it's kind of a ...
