iphone 3gs and sim card question

my wife would like to get the older iphone because she believes when she traveles internationally she will be able to switch to a local card when she arrives; i said i don't think it will work that way but i'm not really sure. can anyone please clarify this for us? thanking you in advance-JT

Thanks-very very interesting article; I should have known to go to phonecan in the first place. She is from Indonesia where there are of course iphones. Some of her friends have used their iphones there but I'm not sure of the logistics involved; this will need some more research before I commit money to this project lol.

you would have to jailbreak it. AT&T cannot provide an unlock code for iphones
