I am currently with SprintPCS and would like to get the RAZR and Cingular, but have a few questions. First off, I am in Southwestern Michigan, near Indiana. I am unsure what my coverage here is. I thought about buying one of the cheap prepaid phones for $30 to test signal strengths prior to making my main purchase, is this a good way to test for signals? Is there some other place I can find coverage maps that would be quite accurate? My zip is 49099.
Also, on the internet side of things, if I get the $25 'Media Net - Unlimited' will that get me everything? I guess I am confused about the 4 MediaNet options vs. the Media Basic/Media Works option. Or do you have to buy from both sections, one for bandwidth amount, and then Basic or W...

Ok, here's the deal. You have 30 days to try the service and the phone. If you don't like the service, you can return the phone if you keep everything in the box(including the box). If it is a phone with a rebate, son't send that off until you KNOW that you are going to keep it. You can also switch the phone out for a different one and pay the difference if you have everything and keep the phone in excellent condition. You will still have to pay the activation fee and days of use. If you cancel within the first 3 days of activation, then you won't be charged anything, just return the phone. That is the best way to test your service. I don't have the Map tool today, my Cingular websties are not working.
...
it shows that you should have great reception on my map in the brochure. You can see that at Cingular.com if it is working.
...
đ˛ Those brochures are grossly inaccurate, I'd advise usin MTi map tool. See if you can get his address and zip and MTi will tell the tale.
...
Or you can try gsmworld.com they have maps based on seperate frequencies like 1900 and 850. I dont know if they are accurate but they're far from what Cingular or T-Mobile show as their coverage area.

hi kirby....i just checked the map tool we have in our systems and yes they do have partner coverage in the zip code u posted..........regarding media net...the 24.99 gets u unlimited medit net usuage....where as if u go with a media works package that is 19.99 gets u 1000 text/im messages, unlimited multimedia messages and 3MB of media net......the basics package is 9.99 and gets you 200 text/im messages, 40 multimedia messages, and 500 KB of media net
...
that was confusing for even me, and I sellthe stuff. Basically if you want everything, you need either the MEdia Basic or MEdia Works package. The MEdia net packages just give you internet time.
...
I am re-posting this,as I cant see where the post is anymore, and something funky with cookies is going on with my pc and this site, so sorry for double posting it, but I just dont see the original in the reply list anymore....
Thanks for all the information so far! So when you say that there are partner agreements, what does that mean in my area? will I be crippled on some features?
Also, I work in the next town over, zip 49091, but according to cingular.com, if I lived there, I couldnt buy a phone. why would that be? I read reports that there is was a very strong ATT WS signal in 49091, so I assume I should get a strong signal there too.
regarding the media net packages, it really is confusing. but it seems that I only need ...

you'll get the signal, but we may not sell or have a market in that particular area.
Media Net is just web browsing and downloads. You will need Media Basic or Media Works to cover all three (sms/text, mms/email and internet).
...
Is there a way to get Media Works and then upgrade the web browsing and downloads to unlimited?
I currently have the Media Works, and it is great for the texting (would like a little more, but not complaining) and the MMS messages, but I would like to subscribe to Mobi-TV and I know I would need unlimited web usage to get it. Is there any way to do this and still remain cost effective? Or would I just have to get unlimited Media Net ($25) 1000 text messages ($10) and 40 MMS ($5)?
...
I'd do the second method. It'd be better personally.
...
But also much more expensive. That is why I was wondering if there was any way to keep my Media Works, but simply upgrade the 3MB of Media Net to Unlimited.
Or if there was a higher combination package like the Media Works that gave unlimited Media Net and higher Text Messaging.
I'm just trying to figure this out because right now, my bill is 69.98/month. If I upgrade to the options that I listed, my bill would be $89.96/Month + the Mobi-TV. That is quite an increase, and I don't feel that Mobi-TV is worth that much more per month.
So, I guess what I am trying to get at is if there is a more cost effective way to do this other than breaking everything out and paying $30.00 more per month just because I want Mobi-TV, or if I s...

I think splitting it up would be the best option. I've seen billing blunders whenever there are two feature codes attached to a plan (such as a MEdia package and then the unlimited MEdia Net add on). One code "should" automatically be overwritten, but it doesn't always do so and I'm also not sure which code trumps the other.
I tried MobiTV for two months and it was a fun feature, but it's something I'm going to wait on for the software to improve (or until I get an edge phone).
...
We can't remove the Media Works WIX feature and add in the Unlim Media Net feature either. CARE won't let you take off JUST the MW WIX...
...
Why wouldn't they let me drop that feature? That doesn't seem fair. If I want to drop Media Works and get Media Net Unlimited, I think I should be able to do it.
...
I don't know...if I split it out, it would mean $30.00 more per month for me. Doesn't seem like that is smart, or fair for that matter.
I have the RAZR. Are you saying that the TV would not be good since it is not EDGE?
...
We could try it, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the 1 cent per KB overage pop up. The charges can easily be removed, but I've seen similiar things happen to people with text messages in that kind of situation.
So what I'm saying is it might work, but I wouldn't recommend it without knowing and accepting that it might not work.
Do you have the MEdia Works right now? If we added the unlimited internet to that it comes to ~ $45, plus the mobi-tv service. Doing the other plan you mentioned (1000 txt, 40 mms, and unlimited internet) it's ~ $40, plus the mobi- tv.
Yes, I'm also saying that mobi-tv isn't too good on the RAZR. I have one too and I got about 1 frame per second. The audio was streaming with a few periods of rebufferi...

I just wish Cingy was like the other carriers when it came to Wireless Data usages. $4.99 - $14.99/Month for Unlimited WAP usage. $24.99 just seems really high.
...
It is kind of high, but I wouldn't expect them to be giving really good rates at the moment. Cingy makes most of it's money off features and not service, which is why they push us to offer so many. They're playing catch up in the accounting dept with the recent aquisition and also under little pressure to compete since they already have so many subscribers. As data usage becomes more and more popular, and the expense in regard to it become lower prices will certainly drop, and those of us with the ability to wait for the good deals will do so.
...and i just had an amazing phone call that i just HAVE to put up on the lounge so i'm off!
...
All carriers make more money from features than they do actual service.
If Cingy was actually reacting to the pressures of being competitive, they would lower these prices on WAP usage to match all of the other carriers.
I love Cingular, don't get me wrong, but I just had to vent about this. I'm done now.

don't go t singular based on what they say here this place is evil.....evil i say....all joking aside go to the store because SOME of the reps here are EVIL....

i am not evil and i am telling him what the media net packages are
...
Bwahahaha!!! Errhm. I would advise against going to the store, simply because most of the fubared accounts I deal with were set up there. Also, if you set up in a store, I have just two words for you: Roadside Assistance. You might not know what it means now, but you will when you get your first bill.
...
very true....very true the old road side trick......nice đ

lisamApr 14, 2005, 10:55 AM
i will say this i have never once added roadside to anyones account unless they ask me to put it on there...not all the reps put it on

'whisper' ignore him đ
...
Way to make the whole company look good. Thanks alot. Your a real work aren't you? You like your company, but only if your department does it, right? Not all reps don't inform customers of the Roadside. I friggin hate people like you. If I am mad at a person at C Care or CNA, I don's advise my customers against it. Cingular is one company working on unity and protocal, you are the kind of people that screw that up and make it harder to give 100% sevice to the customer.
...
1) I am advised by both my supervisors and call center manager to steer people away from retail locations if possible.
2) If I honestly feel that a customer is likely to get better service by going through one department of the company than the other, I feel obligated to provide them with that information, regardless of the impact on the company, because I am not a tool. Besides, if we actually were providing a common service experiance across the board (I assume that is what you are trying to verbalize through 100% service), I wouldn't feel the need to steer the customer clear of retail locations. Your argument, that I should send someone where their chances of having their acct messed with or bogus features added on, makes no sense.
...

...
I do understand. But my point is that I highly doubt that you are supposed make the customer feel scared to go into a store. There are stores that do their jobs very well, and I take extreme offense to you thinking otherwise. Customer Care and all of the above are not any superior to a store. I understand that the customer comes first, becasue I do the same thing. I don't send my customers to a corporate store becasue I do not feel that they treat the customers correctly. I DO however practice that in the correct fashion. I don't mention the corporate store at all to the customer. I help them with all of my ability. If I cannnot offer a service, I send them to someone that I believe will help them the best. I do not talk crap about...

If I was speaking to this potential customer over the phone, then yes, I would completly agree with you. As I am offering this advice outside of my official capacity, I feel no need to not allow personal prejudices and the like to color my comments. I just want this guy to have a good experiance, and if I can better insure that by talking some smack about the retail stores, then so be it.
...
Jackie, where are you on this one. Jeez I'm in care and I can't beleive you turned a potential customers post into a dispute about which departments better. As with anything there are are good dealers and bad dealers, good care reps and bad care reps. We only know about the bad dealers because if a custoemr goes to a good dealer they don't have to call care for adjustments or fixes. Only a small amount of customers even have to call care. If you are going to post here please act right!
...
I feel that I am acting right, because I am posting on a public web forum, and, as of yet, I have not been banned. As such, I have to infer that I am operating within the rules and regulations set forth by the moderators of this community. Again, if this were inside the call center and I was speaking to this person, I assure you there would at least be a modicrum of discression as to what information I would reveal as to my personal feeling towards store reps. But I'm not. So I won't. BAM!
...
It's not about you or the storereps. It's about having a little respect for the company that signs your paycheck. We need new customers and by bickering with other reps on a public forum for all to see it makes the whole company look bad. The minute you start talking about your experiences a rep you are representing the company. So yes I repeat again, act right. You never know who is watching, or should I say reading.
...
I was not arguing with anyone. We did not sit and post back and forth. I basically just said the same thing that you did. This is a forum, and people are allowed to debate. We kept it mature and short. He stated his point, I stated mine, just as you stated yours. I was just letting the potential customer know that it is not the worst thing in the world to go into a store. I am tired of people in this forum wanting to play mom and dad all the time. Yes, some get out of line. THis was not. It was about Cingular so it belongs here.
...
I do understand how bad this looks on Cingular, and that is why I wrote the post that I did. In no way was I arguing with him personally.
...
I just got in for the day.. I am sorry..
...
Kirby im a care rep in the great lakes/northeast region. What it boils down to is in every company in every department you get your bad apples. There are many good store reps and care reps out there, many that come here and post. It is your choice where you go to start/try your service.
There are benefits to going into a store, like you can return it there if you don't like it and don't have to worry about making sure it gets shipped back correctly.
There are advantages to calling into Telesales too. You can do it all over the phone and no worries about going anywhere to pick anything up.
Either way any issues you may come across you can go to either place and receive help and if by chance you get a bad apple, come in here and pos...

Um, no, you cannot stack features like that. đ¤
...
Really? So now I am confused again, because the website allows me to choose "Media Works" at $19.95 as well as "MediaNet" at any of the various price levels. It was my understanding that Works included 3MB of "MediaNet" essentially, and I assumed (dangerous, I know) that because I could also select "MediaNet Unlimited" for $25 (as an example) that I wouldnt have a MB limit at all, plus have all the features of the "Works" package.
Me thinks Cingular needs a HOWTO on this!! đ
...
You should be able to port.. I don't know how accurate that tool is. As for the stacking of features that mainly means that if you need more internet then you need to purchase everything seperately, meaning $9.99 for text, $9.99 for multimedia messaging and $24.99 for unlimted MEdiaNet. I would try the media works first and see how much you use.
...
Kirby, give the Nokia 6230 a good look before settling on a RAZR. You can do a comparison on this website.
...
Yeah, I do prefer the 6230 to the RAZR too.
...
If I'm going to consider other phones, should I include any others? I have done the search here, and after putting in the options I prefer (BT, clamshell, quad-band) I still had more than 20 phones to choose from! UGH! đ˛
When you guys are suggesting the 6230, I assume you dont mean the new 6230i correct?
...
Either one would be okay... I also would thorugh the 6620 in the scheme too, and the TREO 650.
...
I like Nokia's, always have. I'm not a clamshell lover, and if Nokia put out a clamshell phone I would probably avoid it. As for your quad-band desire I'd say don't bother unless you do some serious oversea's traveling, in which case I'd say the Moto would be preferential to the Nokia.
First and foremost, I don't own a 6230 nor a Razr, but have owned products from both companies. To me, Moto used to be the best, but Nokia fills those shoes now. The company store didn't have any 6230's when I made my purchase. When I added a 3rd line 3 months later, they were out of stock again. My local store said 6230's are the fastest moving high-end phone they sell. I've got my hands on both eventually just to see what all the hoopla was about. The Raz...

And I really do appreciate all the suggestions! I really like the Razr, and it can be had for $349 from cingular, less from other places, but frankly I wont buy from other places as I dont like the rebate terms (having to wait 180 days before sending it).
One thing I still dont know for sure, is how fast the GPRS network is compared to that of Sprint's data network. Are the two on pretty much equal levels, with EDGE being much faster? The Razr obviously lacks EDGE, but I dont know how useful that would really be for me. I am currently happy with the speeds I get from my Sprint phone if that gives a base of comparison.
As for international roaming, I dont do much, but it was just the idea of having it that sounded nice, especially...

We don't use our phones for data, so I cannot help you there. Perhaps starting a new thread with your data question would garner some responses, since your last post in kinda buried now.
Other blogs I troll đ¤Ŗ show varying results depending on the whether you use a class-4 or class-10 device, what version of EDGE card you use, your location, the time of day, and the number of timeslots available. Real world numbers are 40-60 kbps. Some average 20kbps while others average 140 kbps.
...
If you are considering a high end, expensive phone, then I would go for the Sony S710. It has everything and more! Totally worth the money, especially if you are considering wasting money on the razor. đ
...
Kirby, I have both the 6230 and the RAZR. Both phones are GREAT, but they both serve different purposes.
The data on the 6230 is slightly faster, but not enough to make a big deal over. The 6230 also has many more features (FM Radio, upgradable memory, and MP3).
The RAZR is mainly a phone for looks. The bluetooth is a great feature (both phones have it), but with a limited amount of memory, it doesn't serve much of a purpose other than for the headset/handsfree use.
If you want a phone to do EVERYTHING you can ever imagine from a phone, then get the 6230. If you are going for how "cool" the phone looks, go with the RAZR. The only other one I would advise looking at is the Treo 650, but that is only if you would have a use fo...
