AT&T & GREED: Another way to may you pay!
AT&T has begun offering home 3G base stations that look like Wi-Fi routers, but send and receive 3G radio signals instead. These microcells, as AT&T calls them, connect to the Internet and offer wireless coverage of up to 40 feet in any direction. They work with any 3G AT&T phone, but not with Apple’s older non-3G model of iPhone. 🙄
The catch is that you will have to pay AT&T for the boost. There are two payment plans: If you buy the microcell for $150, AT&T will charge your voice calls made using the device against the minutes on your monthly wireless plan. Or you can sign up for unlimited calling for a $20 a month fee, and get the microcell free. 😲

This is funny I'm still laughing from yesterday when I first read it. Apparently Sprint has a similar concept like this called AIRRAVE. Their are 2 serviceable options here:

But while Sprint's airrave is $4.99/month for the extended coverage, ATT charges nothing. Sure, Sprint does distinquish the unlimited calling portion between single/double lines, with with AMAT, it's a very small change.

Now that I look over the offer a bit more, I'd also like to mention that Sprint does not have EVDO service as part of their $4.99/month airave. So not only is ATT's extended coverage airave free on a monthly basis, but it includes 3G service at no additional charge.
Granted, anybody who has the broadband data service required for the airave to work could probably just use WiFi. But still, it's a difference worth noting.

If you didn't get service at your house/office/local wattering hole during your 30 day trial period then why the hell did you keep at&t?? I'm so sick of people whining if they have bad service. Vote with your feet people! Thats what the trial period is there for.
I for one am glad that at&t is offering the microcell. They should have rolled this out though with the 3g iphone in 2008, not 2 years later. Poor planning by at&t. If the market doesn't support the current pricing structure for the microcell then hopefully they will adjust it accodringly.

Working for Sprint, I know a lot more about their services and features, and it's kind-of ingrained to advertise it. I feel a 'brand-loyalty' need to point out when I see a better deal with Sprint.
However, this does not leave me blind to what other companies have to offer. Like many people here, I'm trying to learn beyond what my employer tells me. In this case, ATT does have a good offer with their airave-like device. I won't pretend they don't just because I don't work for them.
I hope that clears some things up.
