I have to end things between us, no no its not you its me, I just cant pay $30 for a data plan to have an Android phone, well I cant pay it for a 2G plan. You see I dont live in Montgomery or Birmingham and yet you still want to charge me for the data plan that only the people living there can get. Like I said its not you, its me. I am sure there are a lot of customers that dont mind paying for something they are not getting, I am just not one of them,so as of today I am taking my numbers to Verizon, to get a couple of Droids, I know I will have to pay for the data plan with them as well, but see I dont mind as much cause with them I am getting what I pay for. Thanks again but its over...

You mean when you switch to show data and it shows edge and you really have to zoom in to see 3g?

lol!!! you are exactly correct. You should really know what the coverage is like where you are before you buy a phone like that. A 3G data phone requires the data plan. If you cant get 3G data where you live, you shouldnt have got a 3G phone. If I live in Arizona surrounded by land and desert, im not going out an buying a boat and then complaining that I cant use the boat.

Wow, I can't believe all of the ignorant at&t fanboys. Oh, and I'm with at&t now, but I don't work for them. I understood what he was saying from his original post.

He has been with at&t (cingular / bell south) for some time. He is now being forced to pay a $30 data plan even though he is only getting 2G data rates.

at&t could have offered a $15 or $20 plan for him instead of the full $30.

Mocking him makes all of you at&t fanboys look like sheep.

I live in a good 3G area; if at&t had done this I would have left them as well. So would most of my engineering co-workers.

Nowhere does it say anything about paying more for 3G. Smartphones pay $30. Dumbphones pay $10/$15. No matter where you are, 2G, 3G, or even GPRS. You are paying for a data plan. Not a 2G or 3G plan.

You are confusing two issues. I understand the policy regarding data usage. Nowhere have I or anyone in this forum said otherwise.

That does not mean that the data policy is right or a good business practice. They will lose data customers by having an "all or nothing" policy.

Forcing a $30 data plan on someone who has only access to 2G bandwidth is bad form. They could charge $20 now and then raise it to $30 when they get 3G in his area.

What is wrong with that?

What about people like me? I live in an Edge area. I'm about 20 miles from any 3G area. I get to the 3G area maybe once a week. So do I pay the $20 and have my phone restricted to 2G or pay the $30 for 3G once a week? Sounds confusing to both the company and customer.

In any sense, we won't do it until Verizon does.

This argument is ridiculous. You pay $30 for a data plan not data speed. Someone already stated that. $30 for full html web & email attachments. You don't pay for 3G. There are 3G phones that are not pda's that DO NOT require a $30 data plan. It's only $15 or $10 if you have unlimited texting. The other hole in your argument is every major carrier still sells 2G smartphones and the data plan is still $30 because once again, you pay for the capability not the speed. You should research before you buy. Blame yourself not your carrier.

It is 😁 Now I cant speak for AT&Ts 3G as I never had access to it... the reason I am with Verizon now, I did complain on the Verizon form, as someone pointed out, that I was not to happy about having to pay $10 for a 25mb data plan jute because my wife wanted a phone that had a full keyboard, but I dont mind paying the $30 on my Android phone for the unlimited plan, nor would I have mind paying for it with AT&T if I was getting 3G service like I am with Verizon, to all the people who defend AT&T like there whole world will fall apart if they dont, I think you are nuts, why would you pay $30 for a 2G speed when you could have a 3G? This is just like when my cable company sent my a letter that said, you have been a customer for long time, an...

So, it makes you feel better to know that you're paying for "3G" instead of EDGE. However, Vz's "3G" is only a bit faster than AT&T's EDGE. (and it's getting slower as more of their customers adopt smartphones)
It seems to me like you're paying for the word "3G" more than anything else... But hey, if that's what rocks your boat, more power to you.... 😉

Edge:
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/technology/edg ... »
In areas where the 3G network is not available, customers will continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, when coverage is available.

The AT&T EDGE network is available in more than 13,000 cities and towns and in areas along 40,000 miles of highways. It provides average data speeds between 75-135Kbps.

The fastest Edge speed I've seen is 500kb/s or so. And even ATT fanboys were impressed with that speed.

verizon 3g:
http://phones.verizonwireless.com/3g/ »

3G brings wireless broadband data services to your mobile phone at average download speeds that range from 600 Kbps (that's 2.4 times faster than 254Kbps DSL modem connection) to 1.4Mbps.

I never said that EDGE was faster than EVDO.
I constantly get more than 400Kbps when I switch my Bold to 2G. This is a fact, and I can send you an email with the results. AT&T has made several enhancement to EDGE (I lost count but I believe its last revision is 9.0 or something like that) you definitely underestimate EDGE....

Mar 6, 2010, 9:40 PM
I don't underestimated edge. But you're "consistantly greater than 400kbps speeds" are comparable to the Verizon phones that consistantly get more than 2.4mb/s

Why should you have to call to ask to have your speed increased for the same price? Seems like they should just double the speed on their own. This way they don't waste postage on mailing you something useless & then they don't have to pay a CSR to take your call.

You do realize 3G is just a name right? It is the actual speeds that matter. On average I bet Verizon's *3G* in your area isn't that much faster than AT&T's *EDGE*. Verizon reps will try and argue that their 3G is so much faster than AT&T's EDGE network but we all know the truth. AT&T's 3G speeds have a bigger gap over Verizons 3G speeds than Verizons 3G speeds have over AT&T's EDGE network. This isn't fanboy talk, just stating the facts.
