Why do so many people complain about data???

I usually just browse through these forums but more and more I am seeing people complaining about having to have data plans with Smartphones/PDAs/Blackberries etc...

What the hell is wrong with you idiots? So many of you are looking for ways to use your smartphone on the network without paying for the required data plan because it's $30 a month - OH MY GOD! $30 whole dollars to receive unlimited data at high speed internet speeds on a device which was designed for exactly that. Do you just want to look cool carrying your Blackberry or iPhone but you don't want to actually be able to use the phone the way it was intended? Then to hear you complain about the wireless providers because they make you put this plan on your phone is just mi...

I have a cape and everything! 🙂

I am encouraged by the fact that no whiners surfaced to try to defend the notion of cheating the companies out of their data revenue.

There is no cap on data when used from the phone. However there is a 5Gb cap if you use the phone to tether to a computer.

Hmm, is there a cap on data when tethering and ATT doesn't know? I have an app on my N95 that let's me use the wifi as a hotspot. The benefits of having an unlocked/unbranded phone, it's none of the carriers business!

The cap only applies when you are accessing the ATT network. If you are using it on wifi, there is no cap on that because it isn't using the network.

There is a "soft cap" meaning that if your usage get's excessive, they can decrease your speeds, but there is no overages for smartphones.

They can change some codes in the system that limit the amount of upload/download your phone can access at peak hours.

Really!!! Well if anybody ever does that to me they need to be dealt with accordingly...if you get what I mean. But then again, it's not like ATT has that much speed they can decrease anyway.

You are exactly right sir. These whiners are the same jerks who have to have their $5.00 latte fix a couple of times a day, get their $35 styled haircut every week, and then they whine about $1.00 a day for data.

Give me a break. I spend more than a buck a day on lottery tickets and about the only prize I win is the machine telling me "Sorry, not a winner."

I think most of them do have the PDA phone as a status symbol.

Then there is the other side of the coin. There are people that their Phone as their only source of internet and computer etc. So of course they would complain about data plans because phone bills are high as they are.

with data and it was fun, but I couldn't stand the dropped calls and the phone freezing up so I gave it up and downgraded to a dumbphone and saved 30 bucks a month in the process. I like my dumbphone, it makes calls and sends texts, and that's all I need!!! Yipee!

I don't mind paying for data on a smartphone, but why can't there be more options available?

There are many options for texting, 250, 500, unlimited. And many options for data on a dumbphone, why not a smartphone as well?

What happens if Verizon jumps their Blackberry plan up from 29.99 to 39.99? Att will soon follow in their footsteps I'm sure. As far as I know T-mobile has the cheapest data plans right now (someone correct me if I'm wrong please).

I just want choices. Why does it have to be all or nothing.

it's all because when you put a limit on data people always go over, and with an iphone or BB bold unlimited is definetly the way to go. Other wise people would be stopping into stores and calling care about there $500 bill and how they deserve a credit for being customers for 90 years blah blah blah. I do think 2G BB should only carry a $20 a month data plan tho.

i have 2 blackberrys on unlimited data plus 700 mins +unlimited m2m with TMO for around $125 a month back in 1996 when Sprint PCS started in Baltimore i was paying that a month for around 60 mins + overages with a very poor network but in Sprints defense the network was in the process of launching i see no use in having a smartphone without data except for the mentioned "cool factor" but to me cool is checking flight status data and baseball scores etc on the roll so paying for data for a smartphone only seems "smart"to me otherwise it is just too big to carry around for voice/txt

When Cingular (back in the day) started offering BBs there were plans for 10MB, 20MB, 50MB and unlimited data. Those plans never worked, cause plp kept going over and kept calling and cursing at Cingular for not letting them know about the fact they were over their MBs.

I can see that. Customers are never held accountable for what they do. Its not a difficult thing to keep track of your usage on your bill. Leave it to people who b@tch about going over to ruin it for people that actually may want to have some options available.

...of equipment subsidies.

The carriers have to balance their Termination Fees with the income from the data package vs. the loss taken on the initial device subsidy.

Under a subsidized system, the only way a carrier could make low-end data plans work is if they had $100 Term Fees with $75 subsidies for light data users and $250 Term Fees with $300 subsidies on larger minimum packages for customers wanting to use more data ON THE SAME (or comparable) DEVICES.

That would be a mess. Consumers would never tolerate that monstrosity of a price scheme.

Join me in the fight for an unsubsidized option in the marketplace!

P.S. We are seeing that effect slightly on the VZW side with the high-end dumbphones. The enV Touch and the Sam...

First off, there are plenty of uses for a BlackBerry or other smart phone without a data plan. I have a Bold (with a data plan, obviously), but I've had other BB's without. They are great phones with good form factors and lots of other features that don't require any usage of data. Other people work in offices with wifi...and have wifi at home.

Second, I disagree with your statement that you receive "high speed internet speeds". That's definitely not true if you're on AT&T. 3G coverage, especially in large cities or rural areas is pathetic at best. I was in Chicago last week for a conference and the 3G coverage, where available (in the downtown area) was REALLY slow. Even in Detroit, where I have pretty solid 3G coverage, my spee...

You are so misguided it's sad.

I have an idea, if you aren't happy with your service - switch to another carrier. I take it from the tone of your email that you have already done that?

Or are you actually trying to defend the notion that you think people should be able to buy whatever device they want and use it however they want (without a data plan, etc)? If you sign up for AT&T and discover you aren't pleased with the network, you have 30 days to turn your phone back in and not pay the ETF.

Let me ask you something, when you got your first car (assuming you are old enough to drive) - did you complain about the fact that the car forced you to put gasoline in it to run?

She must easily mistake proper syntax for "English language." I am not trying to criticize your appealing argument, which was an enjoyable read, but just backing up your statement. When someone retaliates by becoming offensive, that shows a sign of weakness on a larger scale. But to insult one's intelligence, that's just below the belt.
