MAJOR SCAM:
Don't respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages which tell you to call
an "809" area Phone Number.

This is a very important issue of Scam Busters because it alerts you to a
scam that is spreading *extremely* quickly, can easily cost you $2400 or
more, and is difficult to avoid unless you are aware of it.

We'd like to thank Verizon for bringing this scam to our attention.

This scam has also been identified by the National Fraud Information
Center and is costing victims a lots of money.

There are lot of different permutations of this scam.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

You will receive a message on your answering machine or your pager, which
asks you to call a number beginning with area cod...

Ok...there IS apparently an area code 809 scam, but it is not very common anymore, and not as you say (prime example- 809 is for the dominican republic, NOT the British Virgin Islands- which is NOT the same country as the Bahamas. (perhaps you should check out Scambusters.com before actually claiming they said this) This is from www.scambusters.com about alterations in stuff they have released about the 809 scam:

Mistake: The beginning of the email says: "DO NOT EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809."

Comment: This is not our recommendation and we never wrote this. Most phone numbers in the 809 area code are legitimate.

how anal. i did get this from a website so its not like i wrote it. take as a grain of salt .or just take notice ...don't analyze it.

I wasn't trying to be anal, just letting you and anyone else know that it's not as dire a situation as the website/e-mail that has been circulating makes it out to be. As with most e-mails of it's type, it preys on people's fears. Just wanted to set the record straight.
