Wal-Mart waffles on reports of $99 iPhone 3G
By Jacqueline Emigh, BetaNews

Answering an inquiry from BetaNews about Wal-Mart's reputed plans to sell an iPhone 3G for $99, a spokesperson today issued a statement that neither confirms nor denies the rumors.

"We have made no official announcement on offering the iPhone at Wal-Mart," said spokesperson Kelly Cheeseman today, when asked by BetaNews for comment on published reports that the retail chain will start selling a 4 GB version of Apple's iPhone 3G for $99 just before New Year's Day.

The accounts originated on the Boy Genius Report blog before being picked up by o...

It's true.

We just had an agent principal's meeting here in the Dallas market on Wednesday. My ARSM just got the official announcement 5 minutes before the start of the call.

As of 12.29.08 WalMart's will sell the iphone 3g here. No mention of price.

Billing issues here we come. It was nice to have to send the iphone customer to a COR or Apple store, which in my case is 50 miles away. Now they only have to drive 10 based of my locations.

Sholly hit Batman.

You really believe the Verizon of the computer world; Apple would not look to broaden their sales within the largest retailer in the world???

Apple wants to sell as many phones as possible. Wal Marts customer base is perfect for a company whose products don't require reading skills.

The 3g iPhone is only available on the AT&T Mobility website, at an AT&T COR Store or at an Apple COR Store.

I got in a argument with an at&t custy on Saturday about this. He said Apple would never let Walmart sell his beautiful iphone...got very pissy about it when I read it to him off Google news and stormed out. I wish he was here now I would love to rub it in. If you have a product to sell wouldn't you want it to be sold at as many places as possible? Hope that knocks you apple fans down a notch.

Seriously, those dorky fanboys need to be pwned about mApple selling out. They're ****y. Now mApple will be just another product on Wal Marts poorly maintained store sheleves.

Ah, Capitalism. The ruiner of elitist consumer goods. Seriously though, I'm a heavy computer user and I LIKE mApple products, but I don't think I'd plunge the amount of money they want to buy their closed computers. I like my lovely virus free Dell, thank you. (The one I can take apart, add to, and do whatever with windows.)

Hope it goes well for Apple. I would bet a large pertentage of the Wal-Mart customers would have to pay more in deposits than the phone will cost them.

Sure, $99 phone but with a $750 deposit. 😲

It just blows my mind, apple will still not let Premier dealers carry the iphone. They would sell more if they let us. And what makes me so upset is that we are in a shopping center with walmart. We already had to stop carrying the gophones due to Walmart had them 50 bucks cheaper. It makes me upset.

just goes to show how wal-mart (and now apple) are hurting the economy.

instead of letting "small" businesses (dealers) do what they can as far as selling the iphone; they let a large corporation sell them instead.

i say apple's liberal owners are to blame.

thanks apple and walmart.

You guys don't get it. Its not that apple won't let the dealers or authorized dealers sell them. Apple has a contract in place with at&t, best buy and now walmart. The contract states that for no reason will the price of the iphone be able to be lowered and be at a set price with out discount ability. Most dealers can't or won't agree with these contracts. I work for Cellular World and our owner won't agree with the contract because of the terms. SO its not apple shooting us down its the companies not wanting to agree to the terms.

Your owner won't agree to the deal with Apple? HA! I HEAVILY doubt your owner even had a ice cube's chance in hell of selling the iPhone. Please. It's Apple being elitist and "exclusive". If little crappy cell phone companies had the chance to sell the iPhone, they certainly would. Gimmie a break.

OK buddy... You can think what you want. I live and work in DFW which is where our corp office is. I know that my company had the chance and they decided to not go with it. Its too much of a hassle for our stores to deal with them. I am happy to not carry them. We have a lot of other phones we can offer at a better price and at a much better advantage to the cust.

Ummmmm,

I know all the owners of the large agents based in DFW, including the ones with the initials of D.S. and C.J. They did not pass up on the iPhone. If you are truly being told that I would suggest you call out your upper management because it is a line of crap.

Ok, I re-read and see you outed where you worked.

Mr. D.S. would carry the iPhone if he could. Several of the largest agents in the U.S. including Cellular World tried to get it and were rejected.

Like I said, if your statement is true as far as you know then you are being fed a line. I have personally spoken with D.S. MANY times. You guys bought some of my stores in DFW (Roanoke at 114 and 377 for example). I last spoke with him at the Bold launch and we discussed the challenges of the iPhone.

Please question whoever told you that.

The problem is that walmart being the largest retailer on the planet, just goes to at&t and apple and says that they will pull both their products from all their stores unless they allow them to sell the iphone. Now since at&t is smart and realizes that they need to be in those stores buckles and agrees to it. Best Buy did the same thing.

Not even close to being true -
AT&T National Distribution has multi-year contracts with both companies. iphone sales are negotiated directly with Apple and do not effect AT&T's other products in any way what so ever.

Yes- Wally World is getting the iphone. It will launch in select stores around Dec 17th and nationally on Dec 28th.
Wally World Managers have already received training on the device and POS.

One huge reason dealers do not have iphone is because of distribution. Apple handles all distribution of equipment. With Best Buy and Wally World, they are dealing with one buyer and a couple DC's. They are not equipped to handle orders from 500+ independent retailers.

Unless something changes that allows AT&T to house this produc...

I know. customer service is going to hurt bad. The Wal Mart employee ALWAYS acts like work sucks, and that dealing with people is a massively boring chore.

I hope that all Wal Mart does is sell the phone unopened, collect cash and info, and let the customer use iTunes to activate the device themselves.

I doubt it. Then they could turn around and sell at a huge profit if it wasn't activated on the spot.

Dec 19, 2008, 12:24 AM
No, it'd be like the first iPhone. And Apple just relaunched the self activation tool, so I think I'm on the money.

You have to "qualify" to buy it, and AT&T expects activation within 30 days of buying the phone. If you don't activate, huge fee.

I agree. I hate to see such a great device wind up in the hands of WalMart, who buys mostly from China, hires undereducated employees and pays them near slave wages, squashes Mom and Pop business out of Main Street USA, instead of independent resellers who can provide better service and information to prospective customers.

Let WalMart sell every damn thing in the world and there will be no reason for any of us to be entrepreneurial and dream of owning our own business.
