I called at&t and was told that if I want the new iphone I have to pay $399 since I'm in contract and have iphone 1

I haven't heard anyone say that the quoted prices are with a new contract or that the price is only for new customers

Any Body know what's the deal?

I am a rep for att and I know the deal: if you are eligible to upgrade AND if you are a previous iphone 1 user you will automatically be eligible for the discounted price at the time of release.

If you are not currently eligible to upgrade and you are not a iphone 1 user you will be able to upgrade to the iphone 2 at the 399.99 price.

If you dont want a contract with your iphone 2 purchase you will pay 599.99.
