Advice on terminating contract early

Hello! I'm asking this for a family member. Me and my mom have At & T and have been happy w/them. My sister and her husband have At & T as well and last year they moved to Vandenberg Air force base in CA. Previously they had decent service but in CA the service is horrible, we probably get disconnected 5+ times a conversation and what's really frustrating is that you have to wait a minute or two to call the person back after you get disconnected. So my sister's husband's phone broke and they went to the store to see about getting a new phone and was told that the only option was to pay full retail price. They spoke to a manager who told them they could call CS and speak to a manager who could maybe get them out of the contract due to t...

you could always check eBay to save some $$$

getting out of a contract is usually quite difficult. even if he called and said he was being deployed, they would only put him on military suspend and it would not affect the contract. the only way i know of is if you move to an area that we dont offer service AT ALL.

Ebay and HoFo have great inexpensive phones, If the feedback is good no worries I bought an N82 AND an N95 from those sources and saved at least $300 each from retail.

You should be able to get out of a contract for moving into a marginal service area. DO NOT upgrade for subsidized phones. Buy you phones and stay month to month and you will never have this kind of problem.......

Very true! I'm really going to consider an unlocked phone next time I purchase one instead of doing the upgrade/extend contract.

Good info, but what is the exact policy for the reduced termination fee? I've read conflicting outcomes but I thought the fee was going down to something like so much per month on the months you have left in your contract instead of a flat fee? Or is this for new customers only?

i would just pay the etf that sounds like really crappy service not worth putting up with. i would get verizon they're number one with everything, that is where you should go. they just bought alltel so they have coverage everywhere. ppl need to buy reliable things that they wont have problems with...att is not one of them. that is why i have use verizon and drive a honda. i know my car will start and i know i can make a call anywhere with verizon. it is the smart way to fly.

And if you use Verizon, your flatulence will no longer stink. Instead, it will smell like lilacs, and be accompanied by the strains of 'Ode to Joy'.

Really? Wow.

Well, i drive a Kia and have a Sprint phone.

I happily jump start my friends Honda from time to time and let my friends that have VZ phones use mine to make a call when they don't have service or are dropping calls.

This is an ATT forum question asking how to get out of a contract.

I know that VZ does well in surveys about service, but who does those surveys anyway? How many people were actually asked about their service and how many responded?

I was never asked about it when i had VZ. No one i know has EVER been asked to do a survey about anything except work surveys.

As for the OP, I would just try customer service a couple more times. You never know what they might say. But be prepared to be...

Apparently Verizon has better service in the area and it's looking like they will probably switch. Unfortunately though, Verizon doesn't give as good a discount for me through my employer as AT & T, unless Verizon's discount was applied to more than just the calling plan.

Have them ask their local store if they have any phones they can offer at a discount. Here, if a customer doesnt have insurance, we can offer 2 phones for a little cheaper. One is 80 and the other is 40. Dont know if it happens in all markets. You would not need to extend contract either

Thanks for that tip-I had no idea you could get any phone that cheap w/o doing it as an upgrade, even if it is a phone that, feature-wise, couldn't compare to the one he's got but that's pretty good-thanks!
