Go Phone Question

i have a couple of questions about the at&t go phone service. i'm thinking about getting it because i don't want a contract with anyone anymore and it seems like the way to go because they have actual plans with unlimited nights/weekends and free home roaming. which is all i need because i don't travel anywhere. but what i wanted to know first was can i purchase a motorola v600 from at$t and use it on the go phone service or get a unlocked or used one and use the service? i want the v600 because i want mp3 tones and bluetooth for my laptop and pda.

also i used to work for cingular wireless and i know they acquired them recently but the merger hasn't completed yet. i wanted to know from anyone who can tell me if i get the go phone service ...

I have done just that. I bought an unlocked V600 in Singapore (used in on T-Mobile for a while - poor coverage in Upstate NY) and got go-phone service (a SIM) from ATTWS. No hassles, it works fine. mMode and MMS service set up via OTA programming. It costs a little more than a post paid plan, but not too bad. Nights start at 9, but only for a plan that runs $60 per month. Now go-phone is a little different than most pre-paid plans. You go month-to-month. Whatever you haven't used up at the end of a month you forfeit and have to pay for another month. If you use up all your "credits" before the end of the month, you have to pay for an entire month and the clock is reset at that point in time.

i work in customer care for AT&T wireless, so far we haven't been told what is going to happen when Cingular takes over. We have only been told that the plans are " suppose" to stay the same, we haven't even been told where our job positions as customer care reps will be when the merger is complete. They are saying that December is when everything is suppose to happen with the buyout. But i'm sure our customers with AT&T will get some notification before everything is complete about what is going on exactly.

There are some things to note that the first poster did not inform you of:

(1) You can not purchase a V600 from AWS at a low cost price without a contract. You'd be paying FULL RETAIL COST, hence you are better off purchasing an unlocked handset off the internet (eBay for example). The first poster got his from Singapored. Don't expect to get a cheap handset from AWS without a contract, especially the V600.

(2) GoPhone service is not a contract, and since there is no contract the plan stipulations can change at any moment (i.e. when a buyout is completed). Most likely Cingular will honor your purchase and continue the GoPhone service, but nothing is for sure. I don't have a crystal ball so I can't see the future, I'm just guessing at w...

thanks for the info. i'm going ebay to get the phone. i can save about $75 that way with a brand new in box v600. i want the bluetooth so that i can use the headset and to transfer mp3 tones, pictures, and text data back and forth from the phone and computer. i'm going with t-mobile for the internet service i like the hotspot thing they got going. too bad down here it only works in kinkos and not starbucks yet. i hope cingular still honors the go phone service after the switch because i'd hate to waste all that money. but i still got some cingular insiders that can probably hook me up with something. thanks again for the info.

You really wouldn't be "wasting all that money" because if you purchase an UNLOCKED GSM phone you can use any GSM service on it.

As far as Hotspot service goes, I hope you know you still need to purchase a card from T-Mobile that costs a pretty penny. Don't expect to link your cellular phone and use it for HotSpots. HotSpots is a WIFI service, which the v600 does not support.

If you really want to get WiFi service I suggest just purchasing a generic WiFi card and doing some research for free hotspots. In my area (Michigan) there are lots of hotspots all over the place (for free, not from T-Mobile). A good example is Panera Bread has free wifi access at their restaurant. Lots of hotels also have free wifi. ( http://www.wififreespot.com/...

thanks for the info on wifi and hotspot service, i will definitely look into that. hopefully there are some free wifi spots here. i live in birmingham alabma, and i hate to say it a lot of stuff doesn't get down here, like it would in bigger cities. we're not that slow but i wish we had a lot of stuff available to us like say atl or chicago has.

motorola makes has some kind of software that they sell with a bluetooth adapter that says that you can sync with the laptop or pc to transfer data back and for and they also make it for usb too. i just wanted to use the bluetooth because i would need the bluetooth stuff anyway. i wonder though, could i just use a regular bluetooth adapter like belkin or something and just ebay the software becau...
