I hate to say it, but the majority of the time when it comes to corporate acquisitions, the ones usually who keep their positions or are offered the opportunity to transfer from right sized departments are those who work for the acquiring company. This was clearly seen when Cingular Wireless absorbed AT&T Wireless staring back in October 2004.
