What can Verizon do to become better then it currently is?

I’d like to offer my opinion on Vcast. Viewing two minute clips on a phone sized screen just isn’t very compelling. I’m all for enhancing the service, but just don’t think they can make it worth $15/month given the current state of the technology no matter how hard they try. Solution-Give it away free and support it with advertising. I know plenty of people (including myself) who took the free trial when upgrading to a V-cast capable phone, but can’t think of anyone I know who actually purchased the service.

If it was automatically on my phone for free, I’d use it as a time killer to...

I just personally don't like VCAST. Where I live it never works, and If I go places, I will just bring my laptop or the minidvd player a long with me.

It makes absolutely no sense to have video on a phone

Does it make sense to have a camera on a cell phone?

When laptops were invented do you think it made sense to everyone that they could lug a computer around with them mobile?

Wow, that's actually one of the best ideas I've ever heard... I really hope they do move to a Ad-Supported Free VCast... of course, the music videos would probably still cost $3.99 or so...

I wouldnt really mind a 15 second advertisment playing before my sports hightlight that im not paying to see. you gotta realize thats thats why its free, alot of websites have that you watch the video and have to watch an ad first.

Yea, having advertisements to offset those monthly rates are a pretty good idea, and a pretty good business model. Take a look at Google’s success. When people listen to music on AOL or any other venue it will also play 15-30 second clips of advertisements and others and that is why they can offer that service for free.

A CDMA sim card! I would love to have a Treo or a Q but wouldn’t want to carry one 24/7. If I could carry a nice small phone most of the time, then pop a sim card into a PDA when I need it, I would be a happy camper. Another advantage would be the ability to keep an old beater phone around and use it when going to the beach and not have to worry about getting sand or salt water in your new Chocolate (or whatever the flavor of the month is).

No doubt VZW has the best network in areas I need it so I’ll stick with them for now. Someday in the future though, I’ll probably switch to a GSM carrier just to get the sim card. The difference between VZW and Cingular in terms of network quality and coverage gets less every day so I might give Cingy ...

SIM cards have their pros and cons...

2 big cons:
- Stolen GSM phone is usable by the theif with a switch of that SIM. If the carrier disables the IMEI it's still usable on another network if unlocked. Plus, if the carrier does not have that model as your current model (IMEI on system) then they really don't know which IMEI to block out.

- Contacts stored on SIM cards do not stay as multiple numbers per name... it seperates it out such as Mom/H, Mom/C, Mom/W (at least my old Nokia GSM phone did). I'd rather use a cellbrite machine to transf my phonebook and keep multiple numbers per contacts.

Personally I'd rather just have it that you can store all your contacts, calendar and text/pix messages onto a MicroSD card.

Wow "Want_New_Phone" I never thought about it like that and now I see that there are some major advantages to a sim card, especially to us phone junkies who hang around here on PhoneScoop. That would be brilliant.

I think most of us here also want to see verizon get their act together with their User Interface. The user interface is not all that bad, its the fact that they take out features that the phone is capable of, just to make a couple extra cents off us per month. For example OBEX, Bluetooth is stripped down to bare bones, adding custom ringtones and media, and all the other features "Unlocked" GSM phones carry with them, such as the ability to add programs, etc.

"A RUIM card (also R-UIM) or Re-Usable Identification Module, is a removable ID chip for cellular phones made for the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network. The RUIM card holds a user's personal information such as name and account number, cell phone number, phone book, text messages and other settings."

Verizon just didn't implement this card yet, but it would be cool if they did. It would be easier to change phones and transfer information between phones.

This was in the Pro-rated ETF message from Denny as something that is coming soon.

To that end, Strigl outlined benefits Verizon Wireless will add to its Worry Free Guarantee® for customers who pay their bills online via the company’s Web site. The additional guarantees include:

Customers will receive notices via e-mail if there is a price plan that better matches their usage needs.

To enable customers to take advantage of new technology more quickly, any customer with a $49.99 or higher price plan may upgrade their primary line handset after 12 months at the then current promotional price and conditions.

The company will continue to offer a free phone upgrade every two years as it does now for all customers.

Not really the Backup Assistance that your referring to is great becaseu if your loose your phone entirely then you can just re download them to your new phone, even with SIM cards and what they are talking about in this original post, if you loose your phone then you are SOL. Backup Assistance prevents this

1)A substantial increase of safety to drivers- IE a user interface that has type and Icons that can be read MUCH more quickly when driving or bouncing along. (the size that's on VZ navigator and selectable)

2)Displays that can EASILY be read outside in the daytime, like that of an iPOD.

3)BT headsets that actually have enough volume to hear while driving and not talking with the loud mouthed person every hates to be in a room with! (Especially since CA just passed the law tha makes Headsets mandatory while driving).
Also a requirement that all BT headsets sold by VZ work outside in at least a normal breeze.
(This would substantially reduce the number of returns and customer frustration.)

4)Phones that are water and moisture resist...

Oct 12, 2006, 4:12 PM
Yea, but I haven't spoken with ANYONE who is active outdoors that has found a really good BT headset.
As far as not having anything to do with Verizon,
Verizon is a big company and could easily nudge a good company like Plantronics to make an excellent headset that really works. But, Verizon, even while coming up with it's own UI, clearly has some young folks doing their software for their UI.
EVERYOne I speak with gripes about the crappy type size, (every storre rep) but it seems to never get back to the policy makers at VZW.
Tweaking their UI wouldn't be very hard.

As far as brighter back light, take a look at an iPod,- it is an LCD that works great in sunlight, regardless of the backlight..

Yeah and everytime we say we have problems with it there is some up tight Verizon sales person that always says "my customers don't care about the UI." WELL I DO. I remember when you had icons and you could easilly go through the motion of navigating your way through menus by pressing numbers only, now you have to scroll over which sucks if you need to use your phone while driving. But, if VZW wants me to hit another car while driving, I guess I have to do what "God" says. (lol, man I have a flair for the dramatic).

i care about the ui that is why i carry a chocolate, fully customizable, video wallpaper, customeizable shortut keys, three different menu layouts , you can remove verizon banner, you can get rid of evil red bars and make them what you want, you can download videos from the web slap them on memory card and set as wallpaper, you can send ringtones for free through mms, the 8300 offers a lot of these same benfits as well.

*I compare Cingular to Verizon here. They have the same signl strength and coverage where I live*

1. Drop BREW, offer Java apps and the ability to upload our own. I don't purchase your BREW apps, and it is a deciding factor between me and switching to Cingular. At least with them I have a choice.

2. Reenable Bluetooth. I get pissed everytime I see a cool phone and want to buy it, then have to do research to see if OBEX was reenabled on it. I'm never buying ringtones from you, so you disabling my features makes me an unhappy customer.

3. Uniform UI. I've used it on other people's phones. I refuse to upgrade my E815 to anything else. So the Symbian UI is ****, at least I can modify it the way I want it to look.

4. Vcast. No one wa...
