There was no Federal Telecommunications of 1974, the only on was in 1996 and it had to do with who could get into the telecomunincation business in order to make it more competitive.

There was an e-mail that went out among many of our military bases, it basically told people to quote that act. I think that someone was trying to make something up to look like a good guy and combined two different subjects.

The privacy act of 1974 was probably where the date came from as it is on most of our daily correspondence.

The Telecommunications Act, 47 U.S.C. 222, is a federal law that addresses consumer concerns on phone solicitation and has nothing to do with the privacy act.

As the person before stated there is a military or federal discount. I receive this discount, but all you have to do is ask for it through customer service or the business/federal accounts section of your carrier. You don't have to "quote" anything...

generally speaking the discount will only go to the account holder, so if you have two lines under one name you probably can't both have the discount. Discounts usually have restrictions as well, like you need to be on a rate plan 34.99/39.99 or higher a month to receive the discount, so if you are on a share plan your secondary will not be eligible.

This is an internet myth/change letter started some time ago. There is no part of the Federal Comm Act that says VZW or any other carrier must offer discounts to fed employees, especially retired ones. It was posted on some military websites and some military personal received emails about it, but it's not true. A retraction was made but those that posted this misinformation on the internet.

It was an erroneous statement in the retiree magazine NARFE via a letter and has since been retracted: www.narfe.org

"The Letter to the Editor that appeared on p. 50 of the June 2005 issue of NARFE magazine is in error. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 does not provide for a cellular phone service discount for current and retired federal employees. NARFE regrets the error."

Retirees do not get a discount. However, current military and federal personnel do. The discount is specifically 15%. Any claims for a lower or higher discount are incorrect. Other persons prior have stated otherwise and I will also assume that some following me will contradict this too. It still remain the accurate and correct assessment.

A discount can only b...
