Verizon Push-to-Talk

jumpmaster18

Jul 13, 2006, 1:56 AM
I was just wondering if Verizon had any plans in the future of marketing their push-to-talk service any better. I know they have a few (very few at that) phones capable of the service, but are they going to make more phones with the service? I do a lot of business travel, and have both Verizon and Nextel. I have Nextel as my business phone mainly due to the push-to-talk capabilities. My wife and I use Verizon as personal phones. I like Verizon and would like to stay with them as a provider, but if the push-to-talk doesn't become available soon I might just go to Nextel exclusively. Any responses would be much appreciated. Thank you and have a great day.

Once EVDO Rev. A is launched nationwide, I think they're going to revamp PTT because it'll be much better on a VoIP platform.

Let me ask you this, why would you rather have a one sided conversation than a regular conversation where both parties can speak. On top of that you pay more for "push to talk" or whatever Nextel calls there service, when you can call Verizon to Verizon for no extra charge. Plus by you wanting to get the walkie talkie feature you may screw yourself with regular service with Nextels coverage. Just a thought. First see what is your first priority.

Because you can't come on unannounced in the middle of a bank or restaurant and say to your buddie, "Hey the doctor called he said that the rash will go away on it's own in a couple of weeks but it wouldn't hurt to use the salve he gave you anyway." if you have to call first. Why do I have to explain these things?

Also with Nextel, some areas of coverage is now suffering as a result of Sprint integrating the 2 networks. My brother works at a place where his Verizon LG VX4400 & Motorola V265 wouldn't work inside the metal shack, but the company's Nextel phones did before the merger. Now the Nextel phones barely work outside, and show no service inside the shack. The metal shack I work in in Lowell Indiana, Nextel used to work well inside. Now it only works if near an exterior wall, or outside. Only Sprint & Cingular users can use their phones with full signal strength inside the metal shack I work at.
For me, I could careless about PTT, but there are people who like it. I think I'd rather have the other side of the conversation private than let...

No idea why coverage would have changed?!?! They are still using the same IDEN technology and the same towers.

However, Nextel did have to tune slightly its frequency because of interference with government communications...don't know if that would have made a difference.

ATT and Cingular...Cingular wouldn't support the TDMA and made it to where the customer needed to switch over to GSM...so yes, there were issues there.

Sextel is using IDEN for the walkie-talkie phones...not switching (yet) to CDMA. So there shouldn't be any change in coverage...

Nextel doesn't charge extra for their service. As a matter of fact, for $40 per month, you get 450 daytime minutes (just like Verizon) UNLIMITED nationwide PTT (free calling, just like Verizon) N&W starting at 7:00 p.m. (oops, Verizon's start at 9:00 p.m.!), continuing the entire weekend from seven p.m Friday until seven a.m. Monday. Plus, overages are much cheaper( 20 cents per minute over vs. 45 cents with Verizon).

N&W starting at 7:00 p.m. (oops, Verizon's start at 9:00 p.m.!), continuing the entire weekend from seven p.m Friday until seven a.m. Monday.

It is continuous as nights would be from 901pm Fri to 1159pm Fri. And Monday 1201am - Monday at 559am.

They just use nights on the weekends to were the other carriers just say weekend hours covers the whole weekend. You still get free calling with verizon from 901pm fri to monday at 559am.

If that's the case then their website explaining how their free weekends work is confusing. My understanding from reading it is that from 6:00 a.m. Saturday to 12:00 p.m. Saturday your on daytime minutes, as well as other time slices on Sunday.

Anyway, my comment to that poster was Nextel doesn't charge extra for PTT, although they used to.

I e-mailed Verizon and asked them about their N&W minutes and how they worked. Guess what? Not continuous! From 6:01 a.m. Saturday until 12:01 p.m. Saturday, if you call someone other than a Verizon customer, you're burning daytime minutes! The n&w minutes also stop at midnight Sunday as well.

What is so hard to understand about this? This is in there TOS:
Unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes
Night Hrs: (M–F) 9:01 p.m.–5:59 a.m.
Wknd Hrs: 12:00 a.m. Sat.–11:59 p.m. Sun.

So that tell me night covers 901pm to 1159pm fri. And 1200am is monday so that falls into the m-f 901pm to 559am. Since Monday is included in nights 1200am on monday to 559am would be nights!! Why do people insist on reading into things! If this is not true then someone that works for verizon please let me know. Maybe I am the stupid one? Won't be the first time!

you make me laugh. You ever call your own cell phone and it doesn't ring until maybe after 2 or 3 rings? Every network has to locate the handset. Nextel you get that recording. Alltel you get clicks. Sprint and Verizon you just hear ringing but that does not mean the cell phone is ringing.

True, but the time it takes to reach the cell is far longer. Once, I called my brother 3 times with that recording only having it go straight to voicemail. When I got home that night I found it sitting on his bed (he forgot it at home) full signal, 1 missed call from someone else. Gimme a 15 sec latency vs a 60 min latency any day!

I have to agree. I had Nextel for years and got tired of mystery calls where the phone never rang, but suddenly had voicemail. Text and voice messages arriving hrs sometimes a day later. Wildly fluctuating signal strengths, even when within a mile of a cell site and that annoying wait tone and busy tone when in DC.

I had Verizon for a year and a half, and experienced problems with incoming calls all the time. No network has perfect call delivery. Like another poster said, with Nextel you get the recording.

Now Nextel has ringback tones and you'll hear a different recording from those who choose to get this service. Sometimes too, if a person is on two-way, the call will go to voicemail. No call waiting while on PTT, unfortunately.

The whole notion that a 1 sided conversation is wrong in society's eye is dumb. We all have the right to choose what we want therefore that is not a valid reason. It is like someone telling you not to buy an automatic car when you can get a manual one. That way you could save money and gas, but that person might not want to shift all the time (or calling four different people about the same topic). Also with 2-sided conversation, it is not always productive since everyone tends to step on each other.

The In-Calling feature is a great feature for us VZW users, but that does not matter when you call someone else with a different Carrier. The entire US does not use VZW.

People tend to dislike PTT because everyone can hear your conversati...

Does anybody actually know for sure if Verizon Wireless will or will not offer new phones with push to talk? I was told that they would be offering new PTT phone when they released EV-DO Rev. A, I went into a local Verizon Wireless store the other day to inquire about new PTT phones, the rep told me Verizon was not going to be bringing out any new PTT phones, they had discontinued the planned release, Now I know from past experience with Verizon Wireless, they don't always tell their employees when and if new services and or phones will be released: (back at the time when digital service was released, I noticed AT&T had recently released a digital phone, I went to the Verizon Wireless store to ask when they were going to release their digita...

Actually, you are right about VZW not telling the employees. With phones, we know maybe a week in advance... Exact dates of service (ie Rev A) being turned on... we won't know until the day it's turned on. (EVDO there are hints because it is tested and people in the area will start calling in wondering what the EV that has started appearing on their phones is). Sorry....

NexTel has great PTT service and horrid phone-side service.

Until one of them has good service in both areas, you might want to keep them separate.

How sure are you of verizon relaunching PTT when system is upgraded to EVDO rev a, do you have an estimated time frame?

So far every person that has answered has said verizon has no plan on relaunching, this is coming from employees and people that have knowledge of verizon's inner workings.

Originally i was told by verizon that they were going to release their enhanced ptt service when EVDO rev a was built, but something in verizon's thinking must hace changed (in-calling) from what i hear, and they no longer have plans for enhanced ptt (better than the crap they have now), im not really sure why they wouldn't pursue it yes sprint when they release their new service with qchat is supposed to be the best available, but their network still will not be as good as verizons, i actually hope verizon buys sprint/nextel that would solve all the problems

have you been on both networks? i have, verizon sounds better, more call connected, less dropped calls, just my opinion, by the way if you happen to look at consumer reports it is just about everybody's opinion, i wish i could stay with verizon but they are not bringing back ptt and thats what i really want so i am forced to get a hybrid phone (ic502 now,ic902 when released),

yes I have. You made a blanket statement that is not true. Verizon here were I am in NC sucks. Spotty coverage and always on extended network. Which is Alltel. If I wanted alltel I would go to an alltel store! Plain and simple. However were my mom is from in central NJ they can't be beat! Each has there strong areas. But they use the same technology CDMA so there really can't be a difference in voice quality.

voice wise, why cant their be a difference in voice, just because 2 companies use the same technology, it doesnt mean they maintain them the same or have them set up the same. let me give you an exanmple of another part of their service, verizons ptt is horrible long connection time decent sound (at least for right now, not presently planned for future release on new EVDO rev a ?), sprints ptt (ready link) is actually pretty good much faster connection, very good sound.

thats strange according to my wife im deaf.

anyway i just ordered my ic502, it should be here aound around dec 26 or so, hopefully it will work better than nextel for phone service and better than sprint for ptt and hopefully the ic 902 when released will be good enough to keep me happy until sprint releases qchat sometime in 2008.

knowing that im going to have to pay a termination fee with ver is very upsetting, but if they do release a ptt which will be comperable to what qchat is supposed to be will be just as upsetting since i would probably be paying multiple term fee's.

To answer your question, when I came back to Verizon I did so because they were supposed to have releaunced ppt and I was sick and tired of Nextel's garbage phone service, that was a little over a year ago. I already waited, if you read my prior posts, I stated I was told that the new ptt service was supposed to be released by years end, when I realized there was no way for it to be released by years end I checked with numerous people to find out the status of Verizon ptt, right now they don't seem to have any plan to relaunch the new ptt service, Of course that can change, but by th...
