Was your current contract already up? If so you would just have to renew to switch to the family plan. If you decide later to switch down to the lower family plan you would not have to sign a new contract.I signed the 59.99 family plan back in May and decided to go up to the 69.99 this month and did not have to resign a contract. Also if your current contract was up, you should have been able to get new phones at the discounted price.

that will not mess with your eligibility date for equipment, anytime you switch promotions you have to sign a contract, if you move down to a lower minute package on the same promo you will not have to resighn again. If you get equipment in october you will have to resign no matter what if you want a discount and it will just cancel out your current contract, and start you on a new one, hope that helps

Yet another way Verizon manages to screw their customer. Come over to cingular where you don't have to renew your contract just to change a rate plan.

no thanks..I actually enjoy when my cell phone works everywhere I go, especially inside buildings.
verizon rules, so what I had to sign a one year contract, I'm not leaving anyways. 😁

USMC,

To change from the grandfathered local plans, you will need to sign a new 1 year agreement. The new family share is called the AC2 Family Share. The reason you need to sign a new agreement is so you can take advantage of the promotional free nights+weekends, the free IN-calling (mobile to mobile) and the unlimited domestic long distance on the VZW nationwide network with no roaming charges.

Your upgrade date will NOT be affected. Now you may have to upgrade your phones anyways. It all depends on the equipment you have. If your gear is too old, it may not work on the America Choice 2 (AC2) series nationwide plans.

Once you are on the AC2 series plans, you can change up OR down anytime you feel fit WITHOUT signing a new agreemen...

You do not need tri mode. It is over rated. I am so tired of seeing anf hearing people say get tri mode. It is BS for MOST people. I know that there ate some who will benefit from tri mode, but in most areas eaast of the Misssissippi it is not needed.

Although I may mis-understand the posts in this thread, it seems to me that USMC already has two modern phones that will work fine on the America's Choice Plan he would like to upgrade to. Since Verizon will not be subsidizing new equipment for him, what is the possible justification for extending his prison sentice (contract term)?

If VZW is the best alternative from reception/availability standpoint, then he may feel compelled to stay with them. But as a customer, it appears he is being taken agvantage of!

I need to chime in here. I was also on a regional plan until last year. But when I went to upgrade to a national plan I was told my phone was incompatible, so I had to get a new phone.

So be prepared as you may also have to change phones. It apparently has something to do with GPS capability.

Eh? That's a new one on me. I switched from a local Verizon plan to the national one (AC2) early this year, while using a 2-year old Verizon phone (Samsung 530), and did NOT have to switch phones.

If it does have to do with lack of GPS capability as you say, then you have to go back to some pretty stone-age Verizon phones to have to worry about it... stuff like the Timeport or LG VX-10, i.e. cir...

I had an older Kyocera-Qualcomm unit. Still, it wasn't compatible with the national rate plans as configured today. It has to do with GPS or GSM...can't remember which. I don't know when the change occured for Verizon's purpose, but thought the OP should know this so there are no surprises like I had.

It wasn't GSM.....it was definitely GPS, probably for E911 purposes.

the problem was the old qualcomm only had digital and analog! the newer phones have digital(cdma), pcs, and most have analog. On those older phones without pcs they could not be put on national plans because they wouldn't pick up all of the towers, thus didn't work right on those plans, the gps is a fcc mandate not a verizon rule and has nothing to do with the way the actual phone reads towers, so an old tri mode phone would work just fine on our network, they just will not allow you to use them
