Lets take for example I received an Iphone replacement and send back a Droid x. What will happen and if they do charge me, how much? Usually replacements are for the same model, but I'm curious what will happen in the above scenario.

You will get screwed. When they ship out a warranty replacement, they put the serial number on your current device (the one being replaced) in a file. If that serial number doesn't come back to them, you get hosed.

If the rep on the phone upgraded you and actually sent an iPhone to replace a Droid X, you'd be fine. If you try to pull a con, you will get slapped for $200 to $500.

$200-$500 you wish. More like $650 or $750. (16G or 32G) The full retail price on the phone. They don't screw around when it comes to people trying to rip them off.

At least send them back a shell of the phone you receive. Maybe buy a non-working model off Ebay or something.

That still may not work. When they are filling out the request for the FRU/CLNR it asks the rep what ESN they are returning. So if the ESN he returns does not match it could be an issue.

Yeah, good point.

So make sure you rub the ESN off oh and when you call tech tell them that you are getting a white screen and the phone never powers fully on. It may be necessary to actually short the phone on purpose to re-create this effect. That will save you countless hours of Tier one trouble shooting with CSRs at non-corporate call centers.

These days, when an old phone is received it's photographed on a conveyor system about a dozen times, including powered on. You'd have to do a pretty convincing job on the phone to get past the systems they've put in place in the last six months.

Well, yeah. I am confident that I could do it.
