Need help with selecting new phone

Ok, I am thinking of getting into the smartphone arena (currently has 3 year old LG phone) and I currently have verizon so at least I want to keep the same carrier... I browsed some of the current phones like iphone4 and the new droids and the rep suggested me to go 4G since it is supposed to be 100x faster than 3g (the area i am living in is within 4g service) and she said that if I get a phone now might as well make it "future proof" since I will keep it for 2 years+ which I am most definitely planning to. So I guess my questions are:
1. is 4g worth it if I were to get a phone now?
2. Are there any new/better phones coming up for verizon that I should wait for?
3. I read the Droid charger is better than HTC thunderbolt in some aspects -...

Whatever phone you choose get onboard now with the $29.99 unlimited data. Verizon is going to a tiered system on July 7th. I think that date is correct.

I would do it soon. If speed is important for you then go for 4G. My brother is a first time Android and smart phone user and he has the Samsung Droid Charge and he likes it. If you're gonna stick with 3G, I'd look at the Droid X2. I have the Droid X and I like it.

well i looked at the pricing for tiered and it is 30$ minimum so either 30$ for 2 GB or 30$ unlimited i think the unlimited is a better choice for now unless there's some fantastic phones coming up?

very true...there will ALWAYS be fantastic phones coming up. regardless of what phone you purchase, it will be all but obsolete far faster than 2 years.

might wanna check a dictionary if you want to know what obsolete means...

I do agree, all that matters is being happy with your current phone, but if I was happy as a clam with a razr v3, it wouldn't make the phone any less obsolete

How can something be obsolete if it still meets a persons needs? Hmm?. . .

Uh huh, and something can't be out-of-date if it still serves a need.

you know what I mean. all i'm trying to say is, if you get a new phone and it's the BEST of the BEST at the time you buy it, there will be something "better" in less than a year's time.

Yeah, like I wish my Charge was a dual-core, and had NFC. Those are 2 features that would make my Droid Charge obsolete.

It will be interesting to see if NFC becomes common-place in north america as much as it is in asia.

It will. Visa, Mastercard, and the national carriers are all involved in ISIS. Might not be til this time next year that it'll be widely available. I think NFC will be standard in all Ice Cream Sandwhich Android smartphones.

Want a typewriter? Those aren't obsolete in the least since they fulfill the need of typing papers.

Something becomes obsolete because something else fulfills that need better.

I've had the Charge for 6wks. No major complaints or problems. I would recommend getting a 4G smartphone BEFORE July 7th, cause Verizon is going to murder unlimited data then and render smartphones useless.

so the consensus is to get a smart phone before 7/7. Now is 4g also a "no brainer" choice since i will be keeping the phone for a while? I guess what I am trying to say is is 4g really that much more faster than 3g for everyday use?

For 3g the iphone and droid x2 seems very nice. For 4g there are only 3 options and I read revolution is a bit meh and charge seems very nice but bit pricey at 250 after the 50 discount even... is it worth it in the long run or maybe go for the revolution or thunderbolt and save some money?

thanks

4G is most definetly worth it. 4G is capable of speeds of 15,20, even 30+mbps depending on location. So heck yeah it makes a difference.

As to which smartphone to get, well that's a personal choice, I like the Droid Charge because if the amazzzing Super AMOLED display

another question... i read that both tbolt and charge cycles a lot between 3g/4g... is that true? and if it is is it a deal breaker? also do user usually take 4g off until needing to use download/upload? seems i dont have much of a choice regardless between tbolt and charge...

No, for some stooooopid reason even though Verizon's 4G is SIM based, you can't swith between 4G &3G, but with Cingular/ATT you can turn 3G off to save battery power. Yes, it changes from 4G to 3G, but I wouldn't say a lot.

You can turn off 4G on both devices to save battery. On the Thunderbolt you have to download an app from the market to do it. On the Charge it is in the settings.

Anything invokving muktimedia, definetly videos, such as the CNN app, when watching videos if any sort it's good to have 4G on.

And don't forget, you only have a couple more days left before unlimited data is gone forever. So if your gonna get a 4G smartphone, do it SOON! That's the reason I get my Droid Cgarge when I did, I knew tiered data was coming and I wanted to get locked in with unlimited 4G data.

Really? Where is it in the settings in the Charge to go from 4G to 3G? I tried going to Wireless & Networks, I found a way to go from LTE to CDMA, but that appears to turn data off not change it to 3G.
...

Jul 3, 2011, 9:47 PM
That's the setting. LTE is the 4G and CDMA mode will keep you in 3G only. You will still have data in 3G albeit much slower!! :-)

Definitely go with the 4G cause data is the same price as 3G. Spend the extra money and get the Droid Charge. The LG Revolution is buggy and takes forever to charge. The Thunderbolt is a nice phone but has terrible battery life. The screen on the Charge is gorgeous and Touch Wiz in my opinion is a nice overlay for Android.
