looks like I'm stuck with Verizon for the foreseeable future, and looking to get new phones for the whole family around August time frame. daughter's going off to college and Verizon is the only provider with good service where she's going.

would like to get smartphones for me and my daughter, and a bulletproof ruggedized dumb phone for the wife (who has a knack for launching her phones into water, under trucks, down garbage disposals and the like...)

are there any Android based smartphones coming to verizon? ever? don't want a blackberry or windows phone. can't get an iPhone on Verizon ☹️

any new and wonderful LGs? particularly a rugged LG?

Casio Boulder for the wife. Very tough

If you dont like WM or Blackberry, you might as well port out, because those are the only real options with verizon.

No android in the pipeline, and I can bet that there will not be any in the pipeline for 2009. You are prolly looking at 2010 for Android (and that is just a guess).

At this point, I'd say the two likeliest routes for an Android phone on Verizon would be an Android device made for CDMA that falls under VZW's open access guidelines, OR when Verizon converts to 4G technology there's sure to be an Android-based phone somewhere that will be allowed, again, under open access guidelines.

Verizon signed off on Android early on, then decided to step back for one reason or another. I don't know of anyone who knows anything on Verizon's Android roadmap.

We may also find Android falling the same way as Linux-based phones: superior software, little implementation.

I don't really see Android's software being superior over WinMo or BlackBerry, especially not BlackBerry.

But windows mobile..maybe. Android is still pretty young though.

I guess it depends upon your needs and how you use your phone.

I own a 6900 and a 8330. And I can't imagine why anyone buys any smartphone other than blackberry. I know, I know you are wondering why I even own the 6900. I have a grandfathered feature from my days when I was a foolish Silver Q early adoptor. If they ever take it away then I cancel that line. Period.

It's a matter of personal taste. I loathe BlackBerry OS, personally. I respect BlackBerries as productivity devices, but I honestly don't see the appeal, myself. My main gripe with the more recent BlackBerries (ones with media-centric features, that is) is that they haven't been properly consumerized. While I don't want to undermine the intelligence of the average cell phone user, I daresay that RIM needs to dumb down the interface to make BlackBerry more attractive to some users.

I constantly get calls from people who "hate" the Storm, when all it really boils down to is the fact that they upgraded from an LG VX-5400 or something and somehow expected to have no learning curve, whatsoever. Windows Mobile is getting more user-friendly with...

Absolutely true. I'm not stupid but I had a BB for 5 days and hated the thing. It buzzed with emails nonstop and half the time I couldn't figure out what to do with it. And all I really wanted was a functioning calendar. So now I have a Palm Centro and all is well with the world. And I've never read a cell phone user manual in my entire life so I'm sure if I put a little effort into it I could figure it out. I just don't want to work that hard. If I had a dime for every one of my kids' friends who comes in my house toting a blackberry they don't know how to use I'd be rich...
