You cant buy unlocked CDMA phones. That is a GSM feature, not CDMA.

Only verizon phones with clean ESNs will work on the verizon network.

whenever verizon gets off their ass and decides to truly open their network! My guess is that we wont see the "open network" for atleast 6 months. And maybe longer.

All they really need to is offer people an option to flash their phones back to the orig manu OS instead of the red bars. With their purchase of alltel, Sprint is their only real CDMA competition and their phones arent that great anyway.

And still, it's not really an unlocked CDMA program we're talking about. Verizon said a year ago (my, how often this has been overlooked now) that you'd be able to activate a phone that met technical specifications for the network and had been tested (and cleared) by Verizon's own testing facility and/or testing process.

So, in other words, Verizon retains the right to pick and chose what non-Verizon phones can and cannot be used on the network. And seeing as how we've heard NOTHING about this, I'd say the "open network" idea is still somewhere between pipe dream and drawing board.

OK, so by "heard nothing" I meant "heard little."

I work for the company and have heard little about this initiative. The last thing I heard was about Intertek being certified as a testing lab. Note that Intertek is not a phone.

To date, I haven't heard anything about specific devices, which is what I meant when I stated:

"...seeing as how we've heard NOTHING about this, I'd say the "open network" idea is still somewhere between pipe dream and drawing board."

Which means, in my opinion, because I am not aware of specific non-Verizon branded, CDMA devices that have been approved to be used on the Verizon Wireless network, the initiative which was to have open access in place by November 2008, is still somewhere between the pla...

Verizon doesn't have to unlock a single phone. All they're doing it giving the green light for specific, tested, and approved devices from OTHER networks. Verizon's open network initiative has little to do with unlocking their own phones.

I don't hear any kicking and screaming. They chose this, anyway.

Since April, you can activate any Alltel device on the Verizon network. The network is also taking other ESNs if you activate using *228, Option 3.

Same can apply to Telus, USCC and Sprint phones, but they must be either hacked, or flashed to Verizon firmware.

If you're expecting everything else to work beyond phone calls and SMS with another carrier's firmware on the phone, that's entirely unrealistic. There is no "universal standard" in CDMA phone firmware for things like NAV and GIN. I wouldn't expect any carrier's firmware to do that on any other carrier's network.

What we expect right now is a phone that origin...
