I understand that as of today, a $35.00 re-stocking fee applies now on all phone exchanges (except for warranty).
This is going to cut down on people buying a phone and just using it and then returning it.

Well...the WFG was always supposed to be one exchange within the 30 day period. I suppose there were many managers who gave in to pushy customers though. But you guys know that there are people who make a habit of trying out a phone and returning it within 30 days. They brag about it here. They don't care that they are costing the company money. Those phones have to be returned to be broken down for parts or built as Certified Like New Units. So don't be surprised by this. This policy will force sales reps to sell it right the first time. It empowers sales reps to sell the right phone by reiterating to the customer the fee and be sure that the customer understands. I realize that some phones just don't work out for people. Though I try my best to advocate which phone will work best for everyone.
Sometimes I use the WFG tp push sales that day. Say someone wants the Date but pay day is in a week. Get the u340 'til then to test out the network and then get the Dare after pay day.
Gets rid of, "I'll come back in a week" so they can just get it at another location (there are four in my mall alone).

I have had a windows smartphone for awhile. Changing to the new Storm is really risky for me, since it is going to have to be really good for me to give up all the 3rd party apps that I have. So, I am not happy to have a re-stocking fee now and the ability to try the new phone--worry free, was a real plus to me.

I would think this will cause people to stop and think about choosing the right handset instead of having the "I'll try it out for a few days approach".
It is almost like this certain group of people view the old policy as a license to waste a perfectly good phone.
Of course this can also slow down impulse buying and kill a sale.

Why do you say that? There are ways to do an ESN change yourself like online (FREE), over the phone (often the fee is waived over the phone if you are courteous), and now by dialing *228 from the handset you wish to switch to and press 3. Verizon is a successful company because they are a FOR PROFIT company, so they do what they can to make a buck, welcome to capitalism, enjoy it, it's what keeps us getting all the new toys...

You can change your oil for very cheap or pay someone near $30 to do it for you (I am the master of analogies on this forum).
ESNs can be changed for free by consumers in three different ways. Same with phone book transfers. It's easy to do it yourself but easier to pay someone else.

I think you are missing the BIG picture here. Verizon must have either one or two problems. 1. Horrible Phones that people can't understand or.
2. Horrible Service that people don't want.
I have gone in to a number of different service providers and bought Cell Service on a trial period. I've kept all that I have tried for at least 1 year longer for most. I have gone in and tried Verizon and after a few days decided that the service Sucked or the phone sucked and didn't want to keep it. So if Verizon wasn't so arrogant perhaps they wouldn't have to issue this policy. So apparantly they must be losing service to other providers and this is their way of trying to lock people into their horrible company.

I'm glad I had my Nextel on 9/11. The phone networks were useless, and yet I was able to contact my family in NY and DC in an instant with Direct Connect. I was able to talk to my brother as he walked across the Brooklyn bridge out of lower Manhattan. It's probably the reason I am still with them today.
As a tool for emergency situations, the Nextel phone appears to be a versatile option.

Also, wat much service lost during/immediately following 9/11? Considering that only two buildings in New York were attacked, I doubt much cell service was knocked out unless the only towers in the area were atop the Twin Towers.

The lost service was because of Network strain more than actual lost service. Everyone was trying to call that area to connect with loved ones, emergency workers were using it to communicate, in addition to any damage done to towers.
Towers can only handle so much before they overload.

The company works hard to make sure the cell sites have backup generators and that they are working during disasters. I've seen numbers and facts about disaster and Verizon is almost always at the top. I really don't recall them ever not being on the top as far as staying up or being the first back up after a disaster.

We had a discussion about this in the Nextel forum a little while back. They claimed that the Nextel DC was the only service working after Hurrican Katrina. I was in New Orleans during Katrina and my VERIZON phone was back online within a couple hours. These guys told me I was wrong, that I was lying about my personal experience and that they wanted proof. It even got to the point where he emailed me and tried to threaten me haha. So just ignore this fool guys...

Look at it the other way. I have a lot of customers coming in and they insist that they just want the cheapest phone they can get. Even though they are on an unlimited txt plan. So they take the phone home, hate it, and switch it back out. This causes a lot of issues for store inventory.
You can position this as a way to actually sell the customer a phone they'll actually want instead of them just getting the "free" phone. This $35 restocking fee would often be enough to make the customer think twice, because sometimes that's the difference between the "free" phone and the phone they would really want.

You, sir, are an idiot. VZW is charging the fee to encourage sales reps to get the right phone for the customer the first time and to prevent people who are repeatedly getting a phone and return it. Think about the storm which is getting ready to launch, VZW is already offering the phone at a great price and taking the hit on the cost. What happens if someone decides they don't like it enough to pay fpr the data package? They return it and that brand new phone has to be sent in to be used for parts or certified like new equipment. VZW just lost the data package that was supposed to make up for the cost of the phone and they lost what money they did get on thwe phone.
