Not happy with VZW

bsarboukh

okay...so i'm starting to get annoyed with VZW and their fees for everything. So, let's break it down to what features are included in my plan:

450 anytime min (unlim. nights/wknds/vzw-to-vzw)
unlim. texting (video/pic/IM too)
unlim. VZ Nav

OK...so for those few features & after all of the mystery taxes are slapped on, i pay no less than $80+/month. So, i go through my bill the other day and notice that there are megabyte charges included as well. So i call up VZW and ask what they were for, and she says for going onto the mobile web. I told her i don't do that (i'm not adding even MORE money onto my already high-as-hell bill every month). THEN she tells me it's for going onto GET IT NOW. Really? REALLY?????? you're charging me f...

When browsing Get it Now, you're basically browsing the web.
And considering the data charges are costing you more than the per-MB charge, adding VCAST or a Mobile Web plan would probably be a good choice.

YOURE USING DATA!!

Why should you not be charged when you are using their data? Their data fees are the lowest in the biz and more than fair.

and just go to mobile17.com if you want to just get ringtones texted to you for free.

That is the equivalent of walking into a store in the mall, looking around and not finding anthing to buy, then being charged for the electricity used to run the store during your visit. Yep, that'll bring in more customers!

Browsing a VERIZON site should be free. Anything else, charge appropriately.

There's no need to make an analogy here.

ALL CELL CARRIERS CHARGE FOR THIS. This is not just a verizon thing, but verizon does offer the lowest rates of any carrier.

And your mall analogy doesn't really work...the mall has to power the lights and everything else whether or not YOU enter the doors (there are other people in play here, you might not buy something, but someone else might) Verizon however, isnt using any of their bandwidth if you never log on to the data network. As soon as you log on, you are now receiving a service. If you wanna play around, then pay for it.

Chris I usually agree with you, but that didn't make any sense. I agree with Gregg. I am more likely to "buy" something if I can "browse" for free. If malls start to charge me just to walk through their doors (because they do have to pay for electricity, heat, etc.), I won't go any more unless I HAVE to buy something. And if people aren't lured in by sales or ads, or whatever, what incentive to they have to come in and browse, and then, hopefully purchase?

No one is stopping you from browsing tho, yes, it will use some of your data, but where does it end?

What if I want to just "browse" sports scores....or just "browse" on amazon mobile. If they allow if for ringtones, then Im sure there are other things you will want to browse for free.

The easy thing to do is just say, "if you on mobile web, your paying for it. PERIOD." Verizon needs to have a clear uniform policy and Im okay with the way they do it.

You are being provided with a service (mobile web) so you should pay for it just like everyone else. Plus, can verizon really distinguish between ringtone browsing and regular mobile web use? My guess is that this could be an issue as well.

I agree, they are outrageous. You will find here on Phonescoop, that the response from most VZW employees will equal what you find in the store...if you don't like it, go elsewhere, we are not taking your complaint into consideration because we do not need you.

I am starting to think the government should regulate EVERTYTHING because the corporations are all in cahoots.

Your other alternative of course is to take a vow of poverty.

Comparing browsing get it now to going to the store and not buying something is a terrible analogy.

Even though you don't pay to get in the door at the store they do charge you. They increase the cost of items to pay for overhead like powering the building and heating. Every time you buy something you put money towards those things

So I guess the question is... Would you rather pay for a service when you use it (browsing gin, mobile web) or pay EXTRA every time you purchase something??

Believe me on this one if vzw didn't charge 1.99/mb, EVERY customer would have to pay more monthly whether THEY browsed or not. So other people would pay for services you use. Then there would be the power users that use 100s of megabytes a month and ...

I mentioned "...going to the store and not buying something ...."

You claimed that, "Even though you don't pay to get in the door at the store they do charge you."

How, pray tell, do they charge me IF I DO NOT BUY SOMETHING? No purchase...no added cost.

You then state, "They increase the cost of items to pay for overhead like powering the building and heating."

No kidding? I suppose you think VZW does not charge "extra" to cover costs of running computers and data centers from which to download ringtones, etc? Of course they do, and they would continue to do so whether or not the browsing time itself got billed. Do you think VZW paid $1.99 for a ringtone, and then charged the same amount for it? No, they are making a profit on it...

I hear your pain. I think it's ridiculous for them to charge you per MB on a site that you buy things from. It's like having to pay so you can browse through a store because you are using up their space and their resources when browsing.

Yeah, I know. I remember when you could use your phone as a modem at 14.4k speeds and it just used your airtime! Where did those days go? I also remember the days of no such concept as unlimited, you only had certain metropolitan areas you could use your phone and it was 20 bucks a month AND 20 cents a minute. Figure a 3000 minute plan on that rate. Wow how pricy stuff has gotten lately...

Their signal bounces a lot. I've used GSM for over 5 years, and now that I just switched to CDMA, I like it a lot better.

And AT&T's data network is a lot slower. Edge is not fun but I don't think the iPhone has Edge, does it? (I cannot remember!!!)

ya know I found AT&T's "more bars" claim...

More bars claim compares AT&T's network before to after merger.

There you have it, found it right on their website. Their "more bars" claim is a sham, they don't have better coverage, its just a compairison of the "before and after" illustion of the network merger. haha

AT&T's claim of more bars in more places is based on all the international roaming agreements they have. Those billboards that claim AT&T works in different places around the globe were all over the place last year.

Now, when it comes to national U.S. coverage, Verizon beats AT&T 2 to 1.

I know someone who has the original iPhone, and it's got EDGE. The newest one has 3G added to it, and reverts to EDGE outside of 3G coverage areas.

May I suggest doing this:

Sprint, Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile WHATEVER...it all works great.

it'll take a little bit of effort on your part but once you're all set up it will be well worth it.

go to myxertones.com.

sign up for a FREE account.

enjoy searching through thousands of ringtones, pictures and games etc...

with vzw, you CANNOT send tones, etc...directly to your phone.

open a special folder on your computer where you would put all that stuff. the site will ask you to save it to a location on your computer instead of downloading it to your phone.

then, go to funformobile.com. This website has a FREE ringtone uploader tool. just choose your service provider, enter in your number and click "browse". then find the fi...

I've been using funformobile.com for years and it works great. Most PC Windows OS comes with Wave Editor and you can edit a WAV or MP3 file then transfer it to your phone and use it as a ringtone. Saves alot of money. I've made over 60 MP3 ringtones so far, and estimate that about $3 a piece, wow saves alot!

Ummm yeah...exactly why I will never go back to VZW(Had VZW in 2003). Times are hard and their plans are waaay to expensive for me. Im not saying that VZW isn't a good carrier because they are but Im a single mom and I can't afford it. For their Premium plan the cheapest is 79.99...not including taxes surcharges and fee and you only get 450mins??? It would be ok if everyone I knew had VZW but thats not the case. Only my parents and sister use VZW. Everyone else I know has Sprint, At&t and TMobile. I talk alot so I would easily go over my mins. I would rather go with Sprints Simply Everything Unlimited plan.

I had T-Mobile too, they're coverage is not that great. I just left AT&T for Verizon because AT&T's signal strength and coverage is just so inconsistent. With Verizon, I have solid reception and I don't break out as much.

But I do agree with you on the outrageousness that Verizon, AT&T, and other cellular companies charge for things.

I did buy a small mobile internet plan for my first month, so I could customize my phone, but I am going to cancel it and just keep the calling plan and the small text messaging package, which buy the way, I get more messages with Verizon's 5 dol...

man-up? Dude...the cheapest plan is still costing me almost $100/month...that would be fine if every month i also didn't have to pay rent, buy food, gas, car payments/insurance, etc...for the LITTLE amount of features I'm getting, I'm paying a lot.

Funny how you post a thread to either get information or just vent about something, and you get a-holes chiming in with their cheap 2-cents and rude comments...seriously, if you feel like a posting is aggrivating or a waste of your time: then just click out of it and keep it movin. it's just THAT simple.

Not that this happens to everyone, but browsing for ringtones and whatnot is potentially far more expensive on older plans that use minutes for data sessions. Billing in MB also makes more sense. I'll elaborate on both points...

First off, let's say that you happen to go over your 450 minutes in any given month on an older plan. Let's also say that you happen to have twenty data sessions that're each one minute in length. (For the record, those would show up at calls to 777-000-0001 on your bill.)

The overage rate on a 450-minute plan is $.45/min. That means that you'd be charged $.45 x 20 in this case, which is $9.00. In most cases, twenty data sessions for most users is nowhere near $9.00 in MB charges. You'd probably pay $1.99-3.98 ...
