As of 11/14 VZW will require a data plan for existing customers who uprgrade to a pda/smartphone or new customers who purchase one. They will required to have a feature of 29.99 or higher.

$30 isnt too bad, I just wish they would create an unlm text/unlm data bundle. Sorta like sprint does. It sucks to have to pay $50 for unlm data/unlm texts

wow, just like the blackberries? so even when a non-data plan customer wants to do a warranty exchange, they will be forced on a plan?

It's not going to be on any existing devices. Only the new PDA's being released will require this. The existing PDAs sold today will not.

But I'm saying the models out today will not require this so there replacement wouldn't unless it was by chance replaced with a newer model after the policy takes affect

So...You're saying that if I have a 700p on my plan now (I do), if I were to replace it with another 700p (off eBay obviously) I wouldn't need to add the data plan? I like having the PDA but don't need the data service, and the $30 a month is a bit hard to swallow for a service I don't use or need.

this is exactly my question.

I use a BB, which I love, but our work might be giving us blackberries and I really dont want to carry two BB's.

I would love to just have a treo 755 or centro to use as a personal line with NO DATA. But it looks like that might be a longshot.

If it is a phone that was released prior to 11/14, then no data plan is required. This includes warranty exchanges or buying a used one off of ebay and what not. If it is a phone that is released on or after 11/14, then the data plan is required.

Didn't sound like that. Are you sure this will not apply to existing models after 11/14? We'll find out I guess

This is what I got:

All new PDA that launch Nov14th and after will be required to have a $29.99 feature or higher added to the account. The phone will not activate without the feature code, like blackberry today. This will affect all customer EXPECT government.

PDA's that will not require the feature code
Centro
5800
6800
6900
Q9c
700wx
820
I830

PDA's that will require:

We already do this in our store. NO PDA of any sort leaves without a data package. Even if it is customer provided equipment!

9 times out of 10, if a customer left without the data plan, they ended up with a monsterous bill because they needed one. It's just like the ones that "NEVER TXT"... they show up 2 billing cycles later to add the $20 higher unlimited txt plans....

You don't get a monstrous bill if you block the data however. And taking that option away from the customer is not going to be good for Verizon when other companies don't "require" data plans.

Most won't block data because they still want to get their pictures.

Blocked datat + smartphone = useless

This is like the 15 year-old who wants the Pearl becuase it's cute and can get on MySpace. I let everyone know about the data plan and if they're not the type of person who needs email/web on the got all day, I get them into a different phone.

Maybe so, but my daughter needs a useful calendar, qwerty keypad, texting device and phone, but right now she's in college and has enough bills as it is - she can't afford data, and she doesn't care if blocking it means no pictures. I get your point, but not everyone is a teenybopper brat who's parents indulge them. And not everyone has all day to sit around and get their internet from a 3 inch screen. And your "different" phones aren't near the quality or caliber of the smartphones, and she doesn't change phones every time the new blackberry hits the damn street so her blocked smartphone works just great for her....
whew. got that off my chest. Sorry but I'm tired of seeing this post every time we have a blocked data discussion.

Yup. I'm with you. I want a phone that's also a PDA (remember them?). I do not feel the need to pay $360/year for internet on my phone. I don't understand why some find that so hard to believe.

You block data, you block picture messaging and the ability to get ringtones, etc (for some reason customers don't consider browsing ringtones to be data)

We also require a data package on all phones we sell, the only exception being the Q (which is a special order phone) If a customer insists that they don't want the data, we tell them that we have to add it on (which we do, our company goes over every contract) and if they want to block it, it is something they need to talk to customer service about because if I don't do it right, they can get a hefty bill, and since I never received training on blocking data, me doing something wrong is rather likely.

I'm glad verizon is going to this change. I never got why people would want a s...
