Anyone know? I desperately want the Pearl - but I don't want to pay an extra $30 a month.
I was torn between the Voyager and the Pearl. I think the Voyager is too big and bulky but the Pearl has that stupid additional charge.
I strongly dislike my current phone (LG VX9400) and want a new one SOOOO bad!!
...
The charge isn't stupid, if you don't/can't pay it then maybe you dont really need a blackberry.
BB's are email and data powerhouses, if you're not going to use the data features you are prolly better off just getting a regular phone.
The only way around the charge is get the 10mb data plan which is 24.99. Other than that you have to have a data plan to activate a BB with verizon. I really don't believe there is any way around this. The computer wont let you add a BB to an account without a data plan.

Chris is right. Customers ordering online or in the store are required to get either the $29.99 or $44.99 data package for the Blackberry's. There is absolutely no way around it. Besides the size of the Pearl, what other features do you like?
...
How far would the 10mb plan get someone on a blackberry?
...
probably not very far lol. you could do #data to monitor it and if you went over go online and upgrade to the 29.99 and backdate it np.
...
very far, depending on the types of emails you get.
I have been using the 10mb plan for almost a year now. However, I dont get many emails with attachments or pictures and I use mobile web less than 10 times a month.
The most data i have ever used is 8MB.
...
It really depends on how much you use the blackberries features. If your e-mails are text based without attatchments, you should be fine.
However, if you're planning on using the BB to surf the net, open attatchments / pictures sent to you through e-mail, go unlimited.
Yea, it's more expensive, but it's better than getting overage charges.
I recommend starting on the Unlimited. Watch your data usage for the first two months and if you're not breaking 10mb then lower the data plan.
...
this isnt an attack to the OP but,
I hate this question with a passion and frankly i'm tired of hearing it.
It is what it is. Blackberry's are business oriented email/data devices. They have the $30 data plan required for 2 reasons.
1. they use BB internet and that cost VZW more than their connection
2. if you get one without a data plan, you will undoubtfully use data on the phone, then call in or go to a store and cry about your $500+ phone bill and how you didnt do it and its not your fault
if you arent going to use the email and data features, you dont need the phone. if you are going to use them, but still think $30/mo is too much, then you still dont really need the phone.
Most people i get who want a pear...
(continues)
...
agreed. I hate when people ask why do they have to have the data. WHY ARE YOU GETTING A BLACKBERRY IF YOU DONT WANT TO EMAIL AND BROWSE THE WEB??? THATS WHAT ITS FOR!@
/end rant lol
...
yay someone who understands
i'm tired of 14 yr old girls crying because they want a pink pearl and mommy wont pay $30/mo for it
...
alright, I am not hating on verizon but both At&t and T-mobile allow you to have a blackberry with out the blackberry plan.
I use a blackberry without the data package because i like the complete calendar and phone book data. I also like the option of being able to use the data in the future. i dont believe a company should 'force' anyone to use any feature.
...
I thought att and sprint were the same.
either way, if you want the calender and contacts you can get a palm centro for the same price and it has the same stuff for that.
...
Agreed! Most of us now understand that sales reps don't get nice bonuses or whatever on phones that don't add the data plans, but actually not everyone is 14 and wants a "pink" phone. Not everyone "needs" a PDA phone, but some of us just want a good phone with a usable keypad for texting, the ability to send some pictures and a decent, functioning calendar. The PDAs have the calendars, the other phones just DON'T. I personally think people treat BBs as status symbols, but if he/she really wants a phone without data, go for the Palm Centro. And yes, the ability to add the data for email and web browsing is always available if and when they decide they want it...
...
I can't speak for AT&T or T-Mobile, but VZW most certainly requires it because it has a licensing agreement with RIM that they must attach a BlackBerry data package with any BlackBerry that's activated. Plus, while it used to be technically possible to not put a data package on, system changes have since prevented that.
And really, if you're not getting a BlackBerry to use it as BlackBerries are intended to be used, then why waste the money? You know, it's really sad that so many trainings mention the fact that people get phones solely as status symbols, and I really hate the fact that it's 100% true.
...
Thank you, D102982!
I want the phone cuz I like the other (non-data) features. I like the calendar, I like the phone book, I like the style, I like the size and I want the possibility of adding email in the future.
At 32 years old, I won't be crying to my mommy about anything. I just don't know that an extra $30/month charge is something I'm willing to pay just to have the phone I adore. I simply asked if anyone knew how to avoid the charge. I had no idea it would freak so many people out. HAHA!
...
Well $30 a month is a lot for a calendar and phone book, both of which come for free on any regular handset.
Save yourself the money! 🙂

Are you kidding me? First, Blackberry's are not a status symbol to me. I many different phones, ranging from Window's mobile to basic 'dumb phones.' All of which provide differnt things that I like.
Secondly, blackberry's are not that expensive, and in some cases less expensive that so call 'dumb phones' so I am not saving any money buy getting them.

but the blackberry community, support and personalization is unmatched by any other device. yes $30.00 is a little steep but if i didn't carry one for work i'd carry one for my personal line as well... it's like comparing internet explorer to firefox, IE is the ho everyone has done but firefox is the trophy f*ck.

Buy a Mockup Pink Pearl on eBay or Circuit City. They look like the real thing and you dont have to even pay for service. Just fakes it. Practice making ringtone sounds. Dun na na na Dun na na na Dun na na naaaaaaaaa
(yes I know that's a Nokia ringtone)

$9.99 email only with TMO.
...
There is no way to get around this.. But if you like the Voyager but not its size have you taken into consideration the DARE
...
I did check out the DARE when I was in the store. I liked it, but then came to this website to read the reviews and got scared away. It sounds like lots of people are struggling with the touch screen.
...
How can you read those reviews and get scared? they are pretty good. The touch works great definately in the top two of touch screen phones. If you text a lot you can still use t9 for texting you don't need the full keyboard. As i was reading this some lady was bitching at my co worker for this very thing (4 her daughter) It' a e mail and web device period. Would you buy a lawn mower if you never wanted to mow the lawn?
...
the touch screen is awesome. only one i actually like. the problem is normally the user, not the device
...
Touch screen is a user problem? So it's not that the screen is too sensitive or not sensitive enough live I've read? Those people just aren't hitting it right?
Side question... On ALL touch screen phones, is there a way to set it to be more or less sensitive depending on what kind of touch you have?
...
This stuff isn't free folks.
Sheesh. 🙄
...
Not really. My daughter is a college student who recently switched from her dead HTC 6800 to a Palm Centro. She keeps her phones until they die. She has never had data enabled on these phones. She doesn't need or want the internet or email, but she WANTS a full keyboard, usable touch screen and a realistic, functional calendar. The Glyde, Venus, Voyager, etc. are gimmicky and she doesn't like the performance of the touch or anything else about these phones. This argument goes on and on, but until someone produces a quality "personal digital assistant" that has nothing to do with being on line, this will occur. And for the record, she HATES blackberry - so much for that status...
