Price wise is it worth it to have a PDA and data

I am not a business user. I mainly use my phone to make calls and text and I don't need it to be an MP3...I have one of those. But I think it would be cool to be able to surf the web from my phone and maybe have access to my email. I pay about 136$ for a family share with nationwide mins and unlimited texting. My question is price wise would it be worth it to have the ability to get internet and email...or should I stick to my laptop for the occasional browsing and emailing. Thanks

I say stick with your laptop.

Most really don't need data as an essential, professional workers with BES account yes, but for the average Joe its just something to geek out on....but if your discretional income allows it, than that's great!

I personally don't need data, but I am a gadget junkie so I'll probably jump on board...chances are I would eventually grow tired of carrying it around, or paying the added expense. Do you need it? That's up to you 🙂 Good luck.

Most of the phones will allow mild browsing with mobile web anyway and a couple of methods for email. A PDA is a larger investment up front, and a higher ongoing fee if you're using data. If you don't need the additional features PDA's offer, why spend the money? PDA's are also a lot more sensitive and require more care and maintainance on your part.

If you don't want to pay the high price for NationalAccess data, you can do what I do. Buy a Samsung i730 on eBay (or on pdaphonehome.com/forums go to Samsung i730, there are a few people selling BNIB ones and they're good people), and when you get it, of course activate it (and to be on the safe side, block NationalAccess data so you don't accidentally get charged per kb) and then go into the Connections menu and select Quick2Net as your ISP instaed of Data Network. It's free and only uses your minutes, so it's free/unlimited on nights and weekends. It's really cool. I'm using it right now to write this.

If you have any more questions, just ask.

It probably works but I believe is only a 14.4k connection compared to National Access that averages 60-80k up to 144k. And no where near the Broadband Access speeds. Heck it isnt even near National Access. Thats why you would pay.

Also be careful with the new Nationwide plans. This would work differently then. Data no longer uses voice minutes on those plans, it would be 1.99 per meg.

Oh yeah that might be important.

With these new plans, Verizon is pissing me off more and more and more.

I am really started to hate this company. 👿

Hey now!! They really aren't any different from your ATT or from Sprint... actually we are way cheaper. The same thing anywhere else is 10 to 30 times higher so you cant complain much.

Sprint = $15 for unlimited Power Vision (EVDO) PDA or non PDA. I don't think anyone can do better than that.

Yes, it works just like NationalAccess. You can view web pages, e-mail, or any other program that requires a data connection.

But here's why people pay for NationalAccess:

1) This is slow. Like 14 kbps. It's not that bad normally, but you can't like stream videos and stuff. NationalAccess is broadband speeds.

2) This isn't unlimited. If you like to use your PDA during peak times, this option isn't for you. Like I said, whatever you use, it counts like a phone call. So if you use it during nights and weekends, it's free. Other than that, it comes out of your peak minutes pool.

Good luck!

Does this work on any other phone? I need a phone with amazing reception as I live in a fringe area for signal.

Yes, but the i730 is the most recent. The other ones are like the Kyocera 7135, Treo 600, and Samsung i700. The i730 is amazing for reception anyway, so you don't have to worry.

I just remembered that I heard someone is working on a hack for the Samsung i760 to allow Quick2Net (right now, if you try it will say "Cannot Connect" as Verizon has limited the firmware).

So as of right now, the best choice is the i730, but check back soon to see if this is true. 🙂
