Charging

What do you tell your customers on how to charge the phones?
I normally just say run them down the 1st time all the way then give them a full charge. What have you guys found that worked the best for you & your customers? Do you turn them off when charging? Do you EVER use a car charger? Do you talk on it while charging?

the way i understand it is that lithium ion batteries don't suffer from the memory affect of older nickel cadmium batteries....therefore its not really an issue. mostly i just make sure they know to do *228 every month and make sure to not expose the battery to excess heat as this can cause swelling (aka bad battery). of course its possible that i'm misinformed so if anyone knows any differant definitely speak up, learning, the beauty of forums like this. 🙂

Lithium ion batteries have a set number of charge cycles in them. Every time you charge your phone, one of those cycles is used up. To get the best battery life, you'll want to let the battery die at least most of the way then charge it all the way up. Plugging your phone in for 5 minutes here and there will shorten the life of your battery. You're right that the lithium ion batteries don't have a memory, but you can kill the battery faster by charging it in little spurts.

Yeah, robtheman is correct. It's based off of charge cycles. Also, for the question about talking while charging - that's not a problem that affects the battery as much as it is a problem that affects the phone.

So many people come into the tech department with broken charging ports because they talk and charge (mainly on car chargers) and pull the connection pins. Best example would be any phone that uses the "newer" LG18PIN port (i.e. VX8500, VX8550, etc.). So always tell them not to talk and charge on car chargers =P

We give our customers a Charging Instruction Sheet. It simply says that the first 3 times after you get the phone that you need to run the phone completely dead, then charge it for 12-15 hours to ensure a good full charge. After that only charge the phone when its dead or close to dead.

Remember though they have a set number of full charge cycles and partials add up to full. So if you do only charge for a few minutes it doesn't eat up a whole cycle. Two half discharge/charge cycles add up to one full.
The usuall MTBF is 300 cycles for a consumer grade lithium ion.
Also remember they have a loose somehting like 10-20% of the capacity per year no matter if they are used or not used or how they are used.
