If I want to sign up for Helio, can I buy one of their phones from a third party like eBay? or do I have to get it through them and pay the obscenely large price...

yes, you can get a helio device from anywhere, but you will still have to call cust care to activate it and there will be a contract (2 yr) and be prepared, you might have to leave a deposit too
