Sprint is apparently looking to cap data usage for all devices at some point. From Engadget:

"We're hearing from a couple sources that the shot here from The Playbook is a little out of context, and actually refers to a new feature for businesses looking to restrict disproportionately high usage by employees with company data cards. That sounds a little less painful, does it not? Thanks, everyone!"

I can tell you that the day Sprint its customers' data usage rates is the day we go under. I work for and support the company, but capping data usage for phones would be disastrous.

T-mobile doesn't cap their customers' phone data usage, but they do throttle it--i.e., slice your bandwidth in half if you exceed 5 gigs of data (difficult on a phone, but possible with tethering).

My wife uses her Hero (sprint) as a modem and easily exceeds 5g a month, but she has never experienced any speed issues. After all, she is paying for EVERYTHING data.

Technically the terms and conditions state that "Data Usage Limitation (Mobile Broadband Cards, USB Modems, Embedded Modems and Phone-As-Modem):The amount of data transmitted over our network is measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). Sprint reserves the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred; and to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if usage either exceeds (a.) 5GB/month in total, unless specified otherwise or (b.) 300MB/month while off-network roaming. 1024KB equal 1MB. 1024MB equal 1GB." so according to this, sprint would have the right to limit speeds or even terminate services if continues violation occured.

well i can now let you know that the terms and conditions of service are going to be revamped starting 7-11 that will state if a consumer exceeds 300mb of data service while roaming, we will restrict service or they can opt to pay .25/mb while roaming. this will impact any device.

That's rough for those who roam a lot, but still better than total data caps.

The 300MB roaming cap has always been in place.

this is why sprint starting charing the $10.00 for the evo since these new phones are using more data and is the reason why at&t started to tier data plans so for the "explain the fee guy" this is his answer since newer pda phones are using more data then before. sprint started to charge $10.00 to keep our data plans unlimited on 3g and 4g for all these new phones that using more data then before so yes you pay more for unlimited but still cheaper then all the rest
