Nextel Phone Network Cheat??!?

Alright so I work in a corporate nextel only store and I had a customer come in and say that he went someplace and they switched his iden device to sprint cdma - not possible right? His phone still shows up in the system as iden. He can now get service though where nextel has no service (michigan upper peninsula). He also said that he has a buddy that when he gets to the U.P. dials a sprint number into his phone and it then has service but can not direct connect.

So is there any truth or trick to this? I sell iden phones, they don't roam, they get service where they get it - can't use others towers. I know all of this. Our technician says there is no way to trick the system to use cdma towers.

So does anyone have any guess as to w...

I bet you anything they are using a PowerSource phone. The reason why I think that is because a Power Source runs voice on Sprints network, but runs the Walkie-Talkie on Nextels network. The DC wouldnt work because their is no Nextel coverage, just like you said, but he's getting coverage because he's running and roaming on Sprints Network.

Yeah that is what you would think but it is not a powersource phone! He has an i850!

Really? are you sure? he could of just swapped the SIM card over and not activated the powersource phone in the system? so its still showing as an i850?

Yeah it shows as an i850 in the system and he was actually in my store in person with the i850 device. He wanted to upgrade to the 8350i but he was afraid he would loose his "cdma fix" so he didn't upgrade. He said he went to some third party and the guy "changed it to cdma" for him and has gotten service all over since then.

A few months ago I had a lady in our service center say that she goes to a store and they do something and it gets good service for a couple weeks. Our techs thought maybe they were putting the phone in flash mode for tower tracking or something and that it didn't last long because of that. This guys says he did the cdma switch on his phone 5 months ago though.

Im not buying his story to be honest. Both of us know its impossible with no roaming capabilities on the Nextel network. What do you honestly think it is buddy?

I know it isn't possible, it isn't suppose to be possible anyways. Really though, he comes in and tells us this AND passes up going to a blackberry so he can keep his good service. Why would he lie? It makes me wonder...
