Is This The Service Or The Phone?

I have a friend who shares a Sprint plan with her mother. She and her mom both have much older phones and the service will go in and out on them. That is, there will be a beeping noise on my friend's phone and a message on the screen that says Out of Range, something along those lines. Is the Sprint service bad or is this her phone? It sounds to me like it's her phone. I have some other friends that have the Palm Centro and it seems that their service is just fine. My friend also lives in a somewhat mountain/hill area, but it's still in the city.

how old is thier phone? they could possibly still be in an analog phone. that sounds like it to me. but try and get their phone model/make and research to see what technology the phones are running on. go from there. your probably right guessing its the phone. out of range eh. hehhe

When a phone gets older it will have a harder time pulling signal for two reasons.
1. The battery is going bad and does not allow for as much amplification for the signal/signal pull
2. There could be minor damage to the circuit board from random drops over time / antenna damage.

***there's also the fact about software updates. at somepoint they stop making them for certain phones..then they phone wouldn't be able to locate any newer towers as easily, messing up the clarity of the call***

Come on now, youre smarter than that.

The PRL and SW updates have nothing to do with the level of signal the phone gets.
Every tower is part of a SID, think of it as a honeycomb design, every tower is part of a larger honeycomb. When a new one is installed, it is assigned to that SID, and the phone picks it up without any action on the users part.

Youve been lied to for years about the benefit of a PRL upgrade (hint: It helps the carriers)

there are different pieces that get different software updates. some are just to recognize these "honeycomes" better.. others are for the phone themselves.. (usually the reason some phones have to be brought in to manually have the software flashed onto them)

My friend has a Sanyo VI2300 and her mother's is an old Nokia phone. I'm not sure of the model.
