Hubby and I

a Girl

Feb 8, 2008, 10:54 PM
im already a sprint customer. phone is eligible for upgrade and need to get my husband a phone. any suggestions for phones that are durable and have good signal?

i have a sanyo mm-8300 which has def. been durable and signal has been ok.
honestly, i fell in love with the BB Pearl even though i don't need a blackberry, i just like how it looks.

seems like sprint has kind of junk phones for the most part and they NEVER seem to release anything new thats worthwhile....

all my husband and i need phones for are calls and text.

Have you guys considered the Motorola ic502? My wife and I each have one and they’re very good phones! Durable Mill Spec with great reception...with old school retractable antenna, solid RF. It has a loud ear piece volume and great speaker phone plus nice keypad for texting...not to mention PTT that can’t be beat. You would have to switch to a family power pack plan, but thats no big deal/ or SERO for even a better deal. Hope this helps.

The PowerSource handsets only work on CDMA 1900 MHz so where a Girl's husband's current handset will work on digital roam, he'll be SOL with the Motorola ic502. I would suggest the LG LX260 aka The Rumor for him seeing how he enjoys texting and the LX260 has the slide out QWERTY style keyboard.

It all depends on where you live.

If you don't travel much away from cities or towns near the interstate, and live in an area with good Sprint coverage, you will be fine. I live near Chattanooga, TN. and my coverage with my ic502 is great. I also have roaming capabilites on Alltel and Metro PCS.

Exactly I live in Seattle and Sprint has a rock solid 1900 footprint here, 800 is just for roaming!! When I travel to Vegas and Denver I'm still g2g, no 800 needed there either! Just my suggestion shrug

...Not to mention the fact that a hybrid handset will provide better nationwide coverage than a traditional Nextel phone. cellular band roaming would've been nice, but it's still an improvement over a strictly iDEN phone.

Not to mention REAL sms texting, and WAY better data services!

Yes, PowerSource handset will roam on other 1900 MHz CDMA networks, but I believe people will be better off if they hold out until mid April for the Sprint launch of the High Performance Push To Talk/HPPTT handsets powered by QChat over Sprint's EVDO Revision A network with LG to be the first to market with their LX400 which will be an entry level HPPTT handset. The new HPPT handsets not only will be able to roam on other 1900 MHz CDMA networks, but also on 800 MHz ones and still have the Nextel Direct Connect when used from anywhere on Sprint's EVDO Revision A network.

I purchased mine last year when QChat was still over one year away.

Unfortunately, I cannot switch over to a full CDMA phone because reception inside my work is spotty for Sprint. That is one reason I decided to go ahead and get the Hybrid.

I can roam on them in zipcode area 30720 on my ic phone. I know it's Alltel because I purposely left off my area code when dialing home to see which carrier's pre-recorded message I would get. My home landline service is at&t.

They DO have landline service there for sure, because that is their local phone company.

All I know for sure is that I have an ic502 phone, and when I put it into forced roaming mode in zipcode 30720, the recording that intercepts incorrectly dialed calls says "Alltel."

Actually over the last year or two, Alltel Wireless has deployed 1900 MHz CDMA as an overlay in a select number of areas in various markets of theirs. The majority though is still on the 800 MHz CDMA band.

Agreed. Not to mention the fact that the ic phones don't break into a dozen pieces when dropped.

Yes Sprint offers a slew of hand me down phones I am hoping with Q-chat they will wise up and bring on some quality phones. I found the Katana DLX to be an overall great phone, from the high end screen to sturdy design and even a good camera. The BB Pearl seems to be a good phone, battery sucks but all Sprints phones have this issue. The Pearl cannot send picture like normal phoness you have to attach it to an email which is lame.

If you're looking for a very well made and solid phone, that's the one you want.

* Sturdy hinge construction
* Well laid out keypad
* Sanyo (of course)
* Voice SMS ability
* Great Speakerphone
* Media card slot
* Headphone port

One of the best Sprint phones out there right now that's not a PDA phone.

i don't think we will be using push to talk at all, if ever.

we'll be living on an army base.

and although we will text sometimes we don't text a whole lot and my sister just got the bulky rumor phone. i don't think we need that.

now...suggestions once again?!

I suggest you go to the store and look at them and see what you need and like in features. Then when you think you got the one you like then try it out you have 30 days. That is the best thing to do as everyone has different tastes.

i know this...but thru ebay or some other site that i have to pay retail for it and then i was reading on here the other day that with sprint i would STILL have to sign a 2 yr. contract? even if i pay retail? if thats incorrect thank goodness!

Feb 11, 2008, 6:37 PM
Another thing I do't get. Pay full retail so you don't have to sign a contract. Take a chance on ebay the phone is screwed up. Or go to the store and buy it outright. For what? Your saving 150 or more depending on the phone for a contract. Well do this then sign the contract take the money you saved and put it in a savings account like the the ones that are close to 5% and if you go the whole 2 years you have more then what you put in there. If not you still have enough to pay the ETF. So worst case you break even, best case you make some.

the issue now is that there is no sprint store selling the Pink Muziq. THATS why i'd have to get it from ebay. it was like some limited release thing that they stopped and they don't sell them in stores or on their website ☹️
