I don't recall any instance of two EU companies needing US approval for their merger.

And if the Dept. of Justice did, the europeans wouldn't be kicking and screaming to mind our own business and affairs. And they'd be right as well.
I know those will say, well its their market, they have the right to do what they deem right. And OK, but remember other places have those same rights, and all it does is cause retaliation.
